Internet Connection Sharing - 'Unidentified Network'

Hi guys, I am having trouble with ICS on win 8. On my old laptop (win xp) I used to be able to share my 3Connect dongle internet to connect to Xbox live. I recently got a new laptop with win 8 and whenever I share this internet connection I can never connect on my Xbox (the network to internet part fails). When everything is connected up and shared the Ethernet says 'Unidentified Network' which i believe is the cause of the problem. I've read i may require a driver update but i cannot seem to find one.

My Laptop:
Toshiba Satellite C855-29N

So can anyone help me with what to do, maybe i am not setting up the connection sharing properly? or can someone please point me in the right direction to solving the 'unidentified network' problem?

Thanks, Graav.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have tried the things listed in the post you provided but still no luck. I'm still convinced its the 'unidentified network' that's causing this, and everything i have has not done anything to change this :/

Well if the problem was only about ICS then changing those settings would most likely fix the problem however, the Unidentified Network problem is another beast altogether that has many possible causes and solutions.

The link below shows you how to fix most of those problems like the default gateway showing up as 0.0.0.0. As you read further down the page in the link you will notice many more causes and working solutions in the comments section.

I'd need to see your system specs and a screen shot of the ipconfig/all to help you further. :)

You appear have a connection with your modem showing as the PPP 3 connect, then you appear to have another wired connection maybe this is the settings that were typed into IPv4 properties when you tried to set up ICS?

You need to be using the correct drivers for ICS that have the option to share the connection, not sure if you saw this or not?

It also appears as if somebody has type in both DNS and WINS server IP's into the modem's settings which isn't really correct. We don't really use WINS anymore as DNS has replaced it.

Basically i use a 3Connect dongle as a modem for internet connection. I connect a usb extension cable into my laptop, and the modem into the other end. this is so i can place the modem up high to get a stronger signal. I then have an ethernet cable plugged into the ethernet port in both my laptop and xbox. I used to be able to simply share the connection between 3connect, and local area connection on my old (xp) laptop to gain a connection to xbox live.

The link in my first post should take care of any problem related to ICS, this has already worked on many machines but support for 3G dongles to support ICS through a USB cable isn't something I'd expect to work very reliably.

I understand, but this arrangement was fine before. I don't see why windows 8 has just stopped it from working properly. Is there really no simple solution ?

Yes the simple solution for fixing ICS problems was in the first link I posted, and it took me considerable time to find those solutions which have already worked for many.

3G dongle support for ICS though a USB cable may be better supported with a Google search because it certainly isn't a normal network and isn't really something I'd ever expect to work reliably. :) I'm pretty sure that 3G has a modem/router version that can handle multiple machines and would really make life easier.

Similar complaints about 3G not working with ICS go back to the Windows 7 days. Although I would think that typing in the correct static IP, DNS, etc. may help, with a 3 G modem it's hard to tell what the gateway is because it doesn't even show up.

Can't get Windows 7 to share internet to LAN from HUAWEI 3G - Microsoft Community

As you can see here, 3G and countless problems using ICS. XP machines apparently work no problem, Win 7 and 8 not so much.

And as I suggested earlier going with a 4G router is the way to go and your 3G provider no doubt has a similar product available. :)

I understand the time you have put in to try and help me, and i am very grateful. It just doesn't make sense that those solutions, which work for other people, do not work for me. Also, I feel the problem is not solely due to ICS as the ethernet network still displays 'Unidentified Network' and nothing seems to fix it.

As I mentioned earlier, Google may have a solution for this but the reliability using a USB for internet might not be so good,...anyway the tutorial in the link may help.

I can't really find a Windows 8 specific tutorial for this but the adjustments in services that I posted earlier may help in this respect. I should also point out that Ad-Hoc network is meant to be shared wireless to wireless ONLY and that wireless connections are only made to be shared wirelessly,...not wireless to wired and not wired to wireless, which is typically very unreliable even if can you get it to work.

On step 8 of the link you gave me, I don't have the option it says to select so it doesn't work. Is there any way I can degrade back to windows 7 for free, because it works with that as I have tested on my friends window 7 laptop.

Its not what you are thinking. Everytime you Restart the Windows 8 PC, you have to first establish internet connection and then click RESTART ICS. Within a few seconds other pcs on the net can access internet.
With windows 7 or earlier versions of PC, ICS DIDN'T HAVE ALL THESE PROBLEMS.

Hey! windows 8 engineers if you are reading this post, i MUST CONGRATULATE, for your worst effort you have made in building windows 8. You have ruined the interface by new kind of ALIEN INTERFACE.

1. STILL MISS THAT START BUTTON. THE TILES INTERFACE LOOKS SO IRRITATING FOR DESKTOP PC USERS. WHAT WERE YOU HAVE IN MIND???? ONE OPERATING SYSTEM FOR ALL PCS, TABLETS ETC??? DO YOU THINK ITS A LOGICAL THOUGHT? YOU MEAN TO SAY ONE ENGINE THAT FITS IN JET PLANE, MOTOR BOAT AND FERRARI CAR WITH SAME CONTROLS (IE. INTERFACE). EVEN A NAIVE PROGRAMMER WOULDN'T IMAGINE THAT KIND OF STUPIDITY AT ALL.

ALSO, SINCE WINDOWS 95, PPL ARE USED TO OF SEEING SAME INTERFACE, WHATS THE POINT OF THIS NEW ALIEN INTERFACE NOW ????? HAVE YOU EVER HEARD ABOUT "EASE OF USE" AND "USER FRIENDLY". DO YOU FIND IT EASIER TO SCROLL MOUSE OVER TO 100 MILE LONG TILES BEFORE ONE CAN SEE ITS DESIRED APP TILE? WHAT A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY.

IN SOFTWARE ENGINEERING (ASSUMING YOU HAVE HEARD OF THAT TERM) WE ARE TAUGHT TO HAVE A CONSISTENCY IN THE INTERFACE SO THAT WITH EVERY NEW VERSION OF THE SOFTWARE, WE DON'T HAVE TO SPEND TIME ON TRAINING THE STAFF. ONLY MINOR AND NEW CHANGES ARE TO BE TAUGHT.

WITH YOUR NEW ALIEN INTERFACE, WINDOWS 8 IS TOTALLY A WHOLE NEW WORLD. A WORLD WHERE AT LEAST LOYAL WINDOWS USERS ARE NOT COMFORTABLE AT ALL.

2. ICS DOESN'T WORK AS IT USED TO BE IN EARLIER WINDOWS VERSIONS.

3. CHESS GAME IS MISSING WHICH WAS IN WINDOWS 7.

4. MOST OF THE APPS AND DRIVERS WON'T WORK WITH WINDOWS 8.

5. WINDOWS 8 HAVE MOST TROUBLE USING MULTIPLE MONITORS. ONCE YOU START THE PC WITH MULTIPLE MONITORS, AS SOON AS WINDOWS 8 LOADS, THE SECOND MONITOR GETS REMOVED FROM THE KNOWN HARDWARE DEVICES LIST. SO TO OVER COME THIS YOU HAVE, TAKE THE MONITOR CABLE OUT OF THE PC AND RE-INSERT IT SO THAT WINDOWS CAN DETECT IT AGAIN. AND ONCE DETECTED IT WOULD WORK SMOOTHLY (WOW!THANKS). YOU CAN EXTEND DESKTOPS TO 2 MONITORS.

THE ABOVE ARE THE MAJOR ISSUES WITH WINDOWS 8 OR WINDOWS 8.1.

I WISH THEY HAD STOPPED CREATING OS, AFTER WINDOWS 7. WINDOWS 7 WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, EXCELLENT OS EVEN MUCH BETTER THAN APPLE GUYS. APPLE MAC OSX ARE NOTHING IF COMPARED TO WINDOWS 7. THE BEST EVER KNOWN OS CREATED ON EARTH IS WINDOWS 7.
