WiFi Connectivity

I just got a new laptop (Acer Aspire One 756) and keep having an issue with the internet connection not being able to connect after the computer sleeps or hibernates for a few hours. It usually says identifying network... no internet access. I copied and pasted the trouble shooting that I did below. It still works if I restart or the computer sleeps or hibernates for less than an hour or so. The other computer and devices that use this connection work fine when mine isn't working. I can fix this problem by restarting the router and it works fine again. It's just annoying to have to restart the router a few times a day. It also only does this with my network at home. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the network adapter with the most updated driver, power cycling the router and all the devices, changing the network adapter settings to do not turn this device off to save power, and resetting the Winsock like I've seen on other forum posts. None of these has worked so far. The router is a dlink WBR-1310 and it's pretty old. My wireless network adapter is a Qualcomm Atheros AR5B125.

You have covered most angles - shutting the router down doesn't actually reset the router there is generally a small button you need to push in with a pen and hold it in for a specified time about between 5 and 10 seconds - then you have to reconnect it to the internet as everything is set to default settings - this is done by typing in an address eg 192.168.0.1 in a browser and this opens the router settings - you can download the manual from the dlink site which will have details on how to - generally you just use the auto settings.

I have found with my router if it isn't anything major you can just turn off the pc /laptop turn off the router - wait a minute -then turn it back on - wait for all the lights are up and running then turn on pc/laptop.

One other thing I should of included is with all your wireless laptops/pcs/devices connected they should be logged into and up and running, and left that way thru the whole process, so you only shut down the router and machine its connected to.

If that doesn't help I would say its a driver problem - try updating your graphics driver firstly, and your chipset drivers if that has no result - have you any extra hardware attached to the laptop.

Below is your driver page at the Acer site - where to search for your driver page - it may have a better driver for the network adapter also. AO756 I think for the laptop.

I tried your suggestions all last night. This morning it did the same thing. I copied this when it did it in case it's helpful for anyone.

the adapter is set to auto obtain an address, but its not communicating with the router, showing a loopback address. Go in the router and check your settings so that it is issueing addresses with dhcp. In the wifi adapter properties, ipv4 properties, advanced button, enter the default gateway address, this is your router address, something similar to 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, when you close the settings it should look at the router and issue you an address... the subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0, if you set a static address for the machine, 192.168.x.x first x being 0 or 1, and last x being number of machine on network for example, and subnet 255.255.255.0 it should also connect if the gateway is set...

I tried setting a static ip address and looking at the router settings. It is working now. Why does it do this after I turn it back on from sleep/hibernate?

I'll see if it does it connects right when I log in later today.

I did a factory reset last night and this happened again this morning, so I don't think that it fixed it. My router is pretty old, but I have the most updated firmware from 2008. I wonder if that could be the issue? All of the other devices seem to work fine on this and stay connected even though my laptop won't connect after it sleeps or hibernates.

Most likely the only way to to fix this problem is to make sure that the driver for the Qualcomm Atheros AR5B125, is a Windows 8 approved WHQL driver.

If this was a WHQL driver then this machine should be reconnecting after going to sleep.

That router is a bit or a relic also so updating the firmware may help but you need to know the version number of the router. This router may not be capable of working correctly with Windows 8 and it's only a wireless G router, so upgrading would potentially improve your connection speeds by 6 times and most likely would eliminate the problem.

You need to check the revision number but there is newer firmware.

So, I think that it's fixed! I assigned the static ip address yesterday and it's been connected. Thanks for the help!
