trying to change my public network to private

    Hi,

I'm also trying to change my public network to private.

"Hit Winkey + R to open Run prompt and type gpedit.msc" When I followthis advice I get an error message saying that gpedit.msc can't be found. I'm running win 8 on a Lenovo Think Pad. Thanks for any help.

Hello Jan, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The tutorial below can help show you more on how to toggle between having a public or private network in Windows 8.

Network Location - Set to Private or Public in Windows 8

    Hope this helps,

    Thanks Brink,

I've seen this recommendation numerous times tonight - problem is that when I click on the network flyout - turn sharing on or off isn't an available option. I've also tried to use the unidentified network approach but I don't have Win 8 pro.

    Jan,

Since you wanting to switch to a private network type, double check to make sure that you have Network Discovery turned on, then see if you have the option to turn on sharing.

    Thanks Brink,

I found that recommendation as well last night and turned both private and public settings to network discovery "on". Still when I go to the network flyout there's no option to turn sharing on or off.

Open "Network and Sharing Center", click/tap on the "Change advanced sharing settings" link on left side, and double check to make sure that you have the settings below set the same for you to see if you are able to turn on sharing from above afterwards.

    OK Brink,

I have updated my settings. Still can't access the turn sharing on or off option. Do I have have to reboot the computer?

You shouldn't have to reboot for it to be applied.

Go ahead and post a screenshot showing your Network and Sharing Center to see what it shows for your network.

What options do you have when you press and hold on the network like below?

    Hi Brink,

I can't get a screenshot of the flyout because when I click on jing, the flyout closes. I have 4 of the 5 options shown above - everything except turn sharing on or off.

Here's the screenshot of the network and sharing center

I have vpn to access fb etc. It indicates that there is no internet access, but in fact that's not a problem.

I noticed that you do not have a connection for your public VPN network.

On VPN or dial-up connections, you must connect to the network first, then you should be able to press and hold or right-click the network name to change the network sharing setting with the missing "Turn sharing on or off" option.
