"I noticed that you do not have a connection for your public VPN network." Even though it doesn't indicate a connection, it is working fine. I connect to the wifi first, then logon to the vpn - no problems.

I took a screen shot of the network and sharing center with the vpn logged out. See below

I tried right clicking on the netgear connection (I think that is what you meant - nothing happened). Then I left clicked on the connection and this wifi status window opened

I don't see where to turn on/off sharing here, nor is it available in the flyout.

You can also change to using a private network using the Local Security Policy per the link below. The Sharing options won't come up as long as you are using the network as Public.

    Jan,

Do you have the "Turn wireless on or off" option using the same method in the tutorial below for the wireless network?

I've seen this recommendation numerous times tonight - problem is that when I click on the network flyout - turn sharing on or off isn't an available option. I've also tried to use the unidentified network approach but I don't have Win 8 pro.
I have this problem too. The option is missing from the flyout. I only have the ones seen in the screen shot.

As long as the network is showing up as a Public network you won't get the option to share.

You both may want to check that there is security set up "WPA2, AES encryption" on this wireless network, otherwise Windows 8 may be defaulting to the Public network because of lack of security.

This router is also set up in mixed mode a, b, g, n etc. which limits the connection to only 54Mbps, if you change over to using the 802.11n Only setting you will have much faster connection speeds.

It is my home network, and encryption is set up and has been working fine. I have no problems switching between home, work and public network setting on the win7 machines on the network. My win8 machine is part of the HomeGroup, so I know the network is set to Private on that machine, I just have no option to change that anywhere (without secpol.msc).

EDIT: A bit of googling reveals that several other users are reporting the same problem. The only workaround seems to be secpol.msc

    Fix!! :)

I think I found the solution.

I suspected it had to do with the virtual network adapter, that is installed when one uses the Hyper-V manager to install virtual machines in win8, as it has been the cause of some other annoyances.

So I opened the Hyper-V Manager and selected "Virtual Switch Manager" in the right hand pane. I then removed the virtual network adapter, and after a restart of the machine I now have the option to turn sharing on or off.

So actually it is Microsoft's own software that causes the glitch in the OS At least for me anyway. Hope this fixes your problem to or guides you in the right direction.
