Solved Required ID and password

Hi,
I am trying to help my wife, Sue, get her new ASUS laptop with Windows Eight onto our local network.
Everything went fairly well - she can get to the Internet and can use the network printer. We see storage devices on the local network but she can not open the public folder on a network connected external drive. She is asked for a ID and password. We have no idea what this should be. Her old vista laptop and my vista desktop do not ask for an id or password to get to the public folder. We have password protection off in the network and sharing center. She would like access without supplying a id or password. If this can't be done how does she find or assign the id and password?
Thanks
Frank C

Try entering a username and password for an account on the PC you're trying to access. There should be a box to check for "remember this password" or something similar. It the username and password work, checking that box will stop you from having to enter it every time.

You probably have two choices here, either create an account with the same User name and password as the drive is using or you can ease up the NTFS Security permission settings of this drive which can be done by following the link below. :)

The mystery deepens.
Chev 65, I will investigate your suggestion. I just now read it. FGC

The only folder on the external drive that wants a user id and password is Public. The others do not. I see no difference in the security settings for Public as compared to the other folders. This folder is accessible from the two Vista machines without a user id or password. We have tried all of the passwords that we have on the Windows Eight machine and none work. We know that we have the correct user ID via DOS cmd prompt Net User. Is there something in windows eight that demands a pass word just because the folder is Public?

I had a similar password question. I started a thread, http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/22518-credentials-manager.html but never got an answer.

Struggling

On the new PC with Windows 8, we can get to Public via Network and FranksPC (Vista desktop) or Charlotte (Vista Laptop)
We can not get there with Network and External Drive or with Windows File Explorer > Network > External Drive > Public
Does this additional information elicit a possible remedy in anyone's mind?
Thanks
Frank C

[SIZE=+1]My stepson, Steve, pointed me to the folder permissions in the WD external drive as the culprit.
I never would have suspected the WD disk permissions to be the problem.
I found the IP address for the WD External drive with Netstat 60 -a -f -n -o.
I looked at the ESTABLISHED Foreign Connections and tried 192.168.1.3.
Using a browser, that IP got me to WD login
I did have the Admin Name and Password
From there:
Users > Folder > Share Permissions > Public > Modify > Full access > Enable
The Public Folder permissions were different from the other folders.
Sue's new computer now has access to Public Folder without a user id or password!

That's good Frank, the permission settings are exactly what I mentioned in my first post.

In fact if you looked at the link I posted it shows how to adjust both the Security settings and the Sharing settings. Of course the settings are a bit different because your drive has some type of WD NTFS formatting but I was hoping you could figure that part out on your own. :geek:

Of course I have no way of knowing the IP or the drive letter of this drive but I'd like to think the advice got you a little closer to solving the problem.
