Why the CLOUD is CLOD CUCKOO LAND -2 hrs to upload small

    Hi there
If Ms is really keen on promoting the cloud then I hope they get better response times than this

I'm trying to upload a measly small 500MB file to a dropbox account --I have broadband speeds that unless you have fibre optic cable you'd die for - 40-80 Mbs.

Yet to upload to Drop Box it's taking around 2 hours.

I tested another file of 4.7GB which I uploaded to a Torrent site. The file was simply in public domain (was actually a Linux distro) --- just for a speed upload test --- File took 16 mins to upload to the torrent site. I couldn't think of another site so a public torrent seemed to be a good way to test my broadband upload.

So Anybody got better suggestions of "Sharing" and storing LEGIT files online.

Download from Dropbox is fine -- upload --someone needs to give up I think -- and if Ms make their "SKYDRIVE" like this then forget the whole cloud thing -- it's quicker to send the file by SNAIL MAIL. !!!

    Cheers
    jimbo

    Hey Jimbo,

I just uploaded a 70MB file from my office to Dropbox (via the dropbox folder), in about 65 seconds.

My speeds are 40Mbps download and around 37Mbps upload
Download Speed: 40455 kbps (5056.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 36973 kbps (4621.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

I then transferred a 70MB file via my chrome web browser (from Windows 8) and it finished in about 45 seconds

Perhaps the dropbox servers are a long way from you and you are seeing massive latency issues.

and that finished in about 45 seconds.

Your upload speeds are incredibly fast, I think. I don't think that mere mortals will come up with that sort of upload speed unless paying a bunch for internet. I use Time Warner and pay for "Turbo"--which is the next slowest plan. I get about 20 Mbps down and about 2 Mbps up. So, I only use dropbox (free) for small files I want to have assess to when away. Using speed of 2 Mbps seems infeasible for serious cloud use. Fortunately, I am not a cloud fan.

I don't really have a message here except to add a little info to the discussion and to say that Jimbo45's experience may be more general than yours.

    znod,

I realize my speeds are incredibly fast. This is my work connection.

    If you look at Jimbo's original post, he said;

So, I was trying to show him that I'm in this same category he mentions.

At home, I have a 15/2 connection. It would take a long while at home to upload a file of this nature. I too do not use my cloud stuff for large files simply because of this issue.

Right, I thought it probably was your work connection. And, I see what you were telling him more clearly now. I sort of misinterpreted what he said. But, he didn't say what a speed test(s) gives for his upload speed (or perhaps what he is guaranteed). I presume he got the 40-80 download speed from a speed test(s) (or a guarantee).
