Unable to access properties of my network connection.

Unable to access properties of my network connection.

This is a fairly new install of Windows 8 pro (within the last month), and while trying to set up a static ip up today I found that I was unable to access the network properties or disable the connection in the Network Connections. I am pretty stumped as I am the only user of this computer and from what I can tell have the correct permissions to do so. When trying to check the properties it tells me "an unexpected error has occurred" with no further information.

Has anyone had this problem and found a fix?

It sounds like you aren't using an Admin account on this machine.

Under Computer Management, Local Users and Groups>Users, you should see your name there, under the Member Of' Tab, you should be listed at a member of the Administrators and Home Users. You can add the credentials if you aren't.

Thanks for taking the time to answer! I rechecked that I was indeed an administrator. Even as an administrator I am unable to access the properties tab of the network.

Did some more basic testing today, I am able to change/access the properties if I boot into safe mode with networking.

Did you notice that you aren't a member of the HomeUsers Group?

You need to be a member of the HomeUsers group as well, this is why you are denied access.

Seems Like there isn't a Group for that in Windows 8. Im surprised that Windows would not grant that permission automatically for a user.

I'm not sure why it's not there for you but it certainly should be showing up. This is the only reason I can think of for being denied access to your own network adaptor.

It may help to create the HomeUsers group then add your User name to the HomeUsers group.

To the right you see the "More Actions" click that to create the HomeUsers group, then add yourself to the group using the Advanced button on the last window, hit object types and deselect everything but Users, then click "check names" find your name which is should have an MSN account next to it.

I completely misread the previous reply, my bad. I created the group just like the screenshot shows(with my info of course) and added myself, rebooted and am still unable to access the properties or change the configuration of the network adapter.

I'm totally stumped in that case, I've never heard of anyone not being able to access their own connection unless the machine is in a Domain and has those settings locked down by the Admin and the GPO.

I would go with a refresh or a reset of Windows 8 which should fix this type of problem.

    Refresh Windows 8
