Hello,

My laptop is few months old HP Pavilion g6 OS: Windows 8 uses a ralink rt5390r 802.11bgn wifi adapter.

The wifi was working just fine suddenly it stopped. It detects my home network but every time it tries to connect ends up "unable to connect to this network".
It connects to my friends wifi but not mine. And it connects with cable.

There is a red cross on the wifi network but it's green not GREY.
It is not a modem problem because the other PC connects just fine.
When I'm on wifi, cmd ipconfig gives me disconnected media for all the network cards on the laptop. Command netsh shows failure and access denied.

What I have tried to do for the past week :

I upgraded the adapter/ driver. My windows is fully updated.
I re-installed the network card.
I tried a USB wifi.
I uninstalled the private server.
I uninstalled my Norton because I thought it was blocking the connection I also deactivated the windows fire wall.
I changed the SSID and PSW ... nothing worked.
and of course I tried restarting, resetting, rebooting, deactivating and activating, disabling and enabling every single thing but nothing works.

it's almost a week and I searched in many forums for a solution but it is not the same problem.
Can you help me please ! It is driving me crazy !

Probably won't help, but what does Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center show for your connection? And, when there, go to Change adapter settings. Once there, right click on whatever adapter icons are shown, and run Diagnose. For the heck of it, you could try Ethernet both through the router and directly to your modem. Does you computer have a manual external switch for turning wifi on and off?

And, try using WPA2 if not already doing so. Is Norton completely uninstalled to the point where Windows Defender is working?

Network and sharing center doesn't show anything (no connections) when I'm on wifi.
I ran the diagnose multiple times every time it shows something different last time it was "cannot connect to masked network".

Sorry I get confused between router and modem all the time. I'm using a modem NO router is involved. I should correct it.
I'm already using a cable between my modem and my PC so I can connect.
Yes it has a manual external switcher (fn+f12).
I didn't think of using WPA2.
I uninstalled Norton then I used Norton Removal Tool toremove it completely.

Did Ethernet work through your modem?
Not sure that WPA2 will help, but you could try. Are you setup as a home network? Try that too if not already done and along with WPA2.

None of this would seem to explain why your network suddenly stopped working.

Have you tried connecting wirelessly elsewhere? Starbucks? or wherever?

It is not a modem problem because the other PC connects just fine.
Just to double-check... is the other PC connecting over WiFi (rather than on a wire)? Which Operating System is on the other PC?

Yes it was setup as domestic network.
By elsewhere you mean Somewhere public. No I didn't but I tried at my friend's house and it worked immediately.

The other pc is an HP pavilion dv6. OS : Windows 7. and yes it's always on wifi.

If your are using just a modem, a straight up modem does not have any wi-fi capabilities at all. Only a modem with a router built in from your ISP such as a DSL service. They use a modem/router combo. If they do use just a modem then you'll need a wireless router to make the connection. I'm guessing you do have a modem/router combo. What is the make and model of your modem and what ISP service are you using?

Excuse me for my mistake I'm a beginner at this.
Plus my OS is in french so I'm kind of trying my best in here :)

As far as my ISP is concerned. I don't think that's the problem because like I said the other PC works just fine.

I see; I missed before that your laptop works at your friend's house wirelessly.

I really really really don't want to format it (using the recovery system) . If I do I'm afraid it will not fix the problem !

Apologies if you've tried it, but have you tried the "Forget this network" option?

I imagine you've seen this already but if not, it's in Settings (key combination <WindowsKey>+<I>) then left-click on the symbol for the Wifi connection (1st one of the 6 at the bottom of the screen). This brings up a list of WiFi connections; right-click on yours and select "Forget this Network".

Then try adding it again.

I also wondered if there's other 3rd party software that you could run to check that the PC can "see" the network properly. I think there is software about but I can't remember he names of any good/ reputable ones.

I already tried "Forget this network" it didn't work. only made it worse because now every time I try to connect I have to write the PSW again. By the way after many tries now when I right-click it doesn't bring the list anymore.

I'll search for a software. If you remember any name please post it :)

I think the software I was thinking of is called inSSIDer. I saw the name when someone else posted on the web that they'd used it, but I've never used it myself and don't know much about it or how good it is. Also it doesn't mention supporting Windows 8 so it may not work. :( So you'd try it at your own risk!

If it does work, then it would show you whether your computer can "see" your WiFi, which would eliminate some possible causes of the problem. So it's a tool for investigation rather than something which would solve your problem directly.

According to your first post, you said you tried resetting, rebooting...ect. Have you actually reset the modem/router to factory default settings by using the reset button on the back of the unit. It's a very tiny hole that has the reset button on the inside. You use a straightened out paper clip, slide in straight end of paper clip, push and hold until the unit turns off, then pull out paper clip. This will reset the modem/router to default settings.

Resetting the modem to default settings was one of the first things I tried.
I'll try this wifi inspector software. I hope it works !

So I tried Xirrus and it's locating my network but there is no information whatsoever neither about my wireless nor about my addresses (MAC, IP, DNS, Gateway ...) I'm guessing because there is no connection to the network. So I ran a "Connection test" on both my PCs.

This result is when both laptops when the are disconnected from the network.

This is the one which I'm having the problem with :
HP g6.png
As I see, it can get no information at all unlike the other one.

This is the other pc which is working / connecting fine but I disconnect it to compare the results.

Finally I contacted my ISP and they guided me to resolve the problem. All what was required is resetting the modem and then changing some settings !! I should have done this since day 1.

Thank you all for helping me I appreciate it so much :)
