I have looked everywhere for for this bit of information....

In XP you used to be able to pull up a CMD Prompt and ask: net config server
and this would tell you how many machines/devices (other computers, printers NATs, NASs etc.) that you could hook to a machine.

they removed this function (as far as I can tell) in win7 but you can find references to the maximum number of devices that you can hook up (10 for Home , 20 for Pro) .

Does anyone know how many devices that is for Win8?

Thanks

10 isn't the number of devices you can hook up. It's the maximum number of users that can login to your system.

See description : Net Config Server command.

I have Windows 7 and the command is there (although I get "access denied" since I am not currently logged in as an administrator).

I have not tried it on Windows 8. It might require that you have Windows 8 Pro (you didn't indicate which version of Windows 8 you're running).

I get that "net config server" command to work in windows 8 Pro...and tells me the maximum logged on users as 20.

Yeah, the example in the link showed "10" which may have been for Windows 7 Home edition.
