HI, I have been running windows 7 and vista smb shares for years now with few problems. Now I have windows 8 I cannot get them to work. I've tryed sharing to ID or everyone , no password/password, all the various network interface types etc but I cant get my ithingies , android devices or NAS smb drives to work. Other windows 8 PCs are fine as are windows 7 mostly but any non-microsoft connections fail on either authentication or in some cases dont even see the share.

any assistance with setting it up correctly would be appreciated
TIA
beany

I have a very similar problem, and have been pulling my hair out...
From my Android device using a file manager (ES EXplorer) on my Win7 box I have had no problems what so ever, however, on my Win8 pro box the first time I select the C drive on it I can see it from my phone, but as soon as you back out/up a folder, and try go go back into the folder you were just in, it won't let you, auth error. I have tried it using my account, Administrator account (enabled), and anonymous, all with the exact same results...
It works perfectly in 7, but not 8!

Wow ..this is a windows 8 networking forum and no answers!!!!

anyway I contacted MS and it seems they don't support sharing to non PCs unless I buy the pro version.

so back to the shop go my 2 new windows 8 PCs. Microsoft are going backwards. If only I didnt hate apple and get confused with Linux lol. seems I'll get my old vista licenses up and running again. Who would have thought I'd be happier with vista.

Microsoft wont be around much longer they way they are going. - i reckon i'm not the only one who wont be willing to pay extra for something they had in the basic version of a nearly 10year old OS.

Well, I found my problem, it was that flakey Mcaffee Security Suite that Dell installs. I uninstalled it, and put on Avast and Comodo, and things are back to normal - as far as sharing goes...
