Why my internet speed is slower on win 8?

Hello,

I dual boot with win 7 and win 8. I have faster download speed when i'm in win 7 than when i'm in win 8. Obviously my router wireless settings is the same for both OS. I Googled this and it seems that it's a problem for a lot of users. If it's a question of updating drivers, my laptop is an Acer and i checked their website and they only have drivers for win 7. Could i change win 8 drivers with the win 7 one? Would that work? Are there settings in win 8 that i should check? Anyone here with the same problem? I have a 6mbps connection and when i check my connection speed at Speedtest.Net i get about 5.25 mbps when i'm in win 7, but i get about 1.65 mbps when i'm in win 8. What is causing such a big difference in speed? Any suggestions?

What is the security setting on your wireless router? If it's on "WEP" change it to WPA2-PSK [AES].

After recently upgrading a couple of laptops to Windows 8 Pro, I experienced this as well. Here's a link to a post regarding my Slow WiFi Fix.

If that's not the problem, the next biggest culpert might be third party antivirus, but I'll let some of the experts here chime in on that.

I would try the router security setting first, and if that's not the problem, move on from there. It worked for me.

Thanks for the infos. Will try these at home tonight. As for the router security settings, why don`t i have a problem when i`m on win 7? The router settings are the same regardless of me using win 7 or 8. Is it a problem for win 8 only? As for the firewall i`m using Windows firewall.

Not sure what the right answer is, I'm not too tech savvy, but my experience on the two laptops mentioned previously were Windows Vista HP machines. I went from a pretty steady speed of 270Mbps down to 54Mbps until i changed the security setting in the router. It was a quick and easy fix for me after I stumbled on to it.

Let us know how it goes.

Well, i checked the suggestions given and i can report that my security settings were at WPA-2 Personal. I didn't see PSK listed whatever that means. As for the TCP Optimizer it didn't do anything. Before giving my reply i just saw a new thread posted on the same subject. It seems that there are a lot of people having the same problem. Let's hope that a solution is found soon. I'll have to go back to Win 7 until the problem is solved.

Sorry to hear that... perhaps some one with more knowledge and experience will give you some additional advice soon.

Good luck...

Tried with my 2 1/2 years tablet with win 8 32 bit installed. No problem there. Same speed as with my win 7 64 bit laptop. It seems to me that the problem is with the 64 bit drivers. I'm curious to know about those who have similar problems what version of win 8 they are using.

I had noticed updates seemed to take a long time, ran some downloads today and it is about 1/3 slower even after running the tcp optimizer.

Great improvement - for turtles :) way to go MS!
