I'm trying to get networking up and running between a new Win 8 computer and an existing XP computer.
I previously had 2 XP computers with networking working perfectly. I replaced one of the XP computers with the Win 8 system and now I have this situation:
-From the XP computer, I can access the Win 8 computer but a user ID and password are required even though I have I have selected "Turn off password protected sharing" in the "All Networks" section in the "Advanced sharing settings" of the "Network and Sharing Center".
-From the Win 8 computer, I can't see the XP computer. When I click on "Network" in File Explorer, I get the a green bar slowly progressing across the address bar and the XP computer never shows up.
When I installed Win 8, I selected "turn on printer and file sharing".
Here's some of what I've already looked at:
- ensured that the "Workgroup" name is the same on both computers
- ensured that the XP "My Documents" folder is set to share (nothing was changed since it was working with 2 XP machines so it should be OK)
- I can connect to the internet so my Ethernet adapter is working
- When I originally installed Win 8, the machine had both an Ethernet port and a wireless LAN card. I chose "connect to wireless network later" during installation. I am using a wired connection to the Ethernet port. Suspecting this might cause an issue, I first disabled the LAN card. That didn't correct the issue so I removed the LAN card. Still didn't help.
My system:
Win 8 Pro
Asus CM3870
256GB OCZ SSD (where Win 8 is installed)
2TB Seagate HDD (where data is stored)
The system originally came with Win 8 Core on the HDD formatted GPT (UEFI). I failed in many attempts to install Win on the SSD as UEFI. Ultimately, I did a clean Win 8 Pro MBR install on the SSD, deleted Win 8 from the HDD cleaned the UEFI and reformatted as NTFS.
I can live with password access from the XP to the Win 8 machine. However, I really need to get networking from the Win 8 to XP machine working.
Can anyone help?
