Hello everyone!

i bought a windows 8 netbook (Sony VAIO SV-E1112M1E) and in the beggining everything worked just fine.
a few days ago the problem started, although it says that i am connected to the internet i cant open a single page with the browser neither in desktop nor metro mode. when i open the wireless network connection status i get:

ipv4 connectivity: internet
ipv6 connectivity: no network access
(im translating those terms, i hope i got them right)

ive been sitting for hours and cant find a solution. i find only articles about windows 7 and this FixIt tool doesnt work on 8.

i tried:
checking/unchecking the: internetprotocoll Version 6 option
editing the registry as suggested in How to disable IP version 6 or its specific components in Windows

windows xp laptop works just fine, ps3 wphone also.
router Thompson TWG870U

im no expert on computers but i know my way around.
help would be much appreciated!!

It's very likely that your network (or some component of it) does not support IPv6. You don't really need it. I can't say why you are unable to connect to the internet despite the status you see: it could be a driver issue, or something else.

When you type ipconfig /all in a command window what do you see? Compare that to the same thing from your XP machine. If you post the results here we may be able to help you do more troubleshooting.

To disable IPv6 you don't need to edit the registry: just edit the properties of your local area network connection and uncheck the IPv6 box.

Windows XP does not use IPv6.

Stellar, I'm not sure what could be causing your problem (like you, I'm not an expert), but if you check-out the snip in my post from yesterday regarding my Slow WiFi fix, you can see that my IPv6 says "No Internet Access," as well. But, if you read my post, you can also see that I do indeed have access to the internet via the IPv4. I'm just wondering if instead of an IPv6 issue, something else is causing your problem?

I'm sure one of the experts here can help. Good luck.

First, this has absolutely nothing to do with IPv6, which by the way, always says no internet access because it's only used internally with Windows at this point. Do not ever disable IPv6 as there are components in Windows that rely on it's functionality.

This problem is usually from either Winsock or the TCP/IP stack requiring a reset which is a very common problem.

Run the following two commands one at time, use an elevated command prompt, hit enter after each command "in bold". Then restart your machine. :)

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

thank you for your replies, unfortunately those 2 commands did not solve the problem. :(

That's good, it narrows the problem down,. You do show a valid IP so something is blocking the connection.

Most likely your Anti virus or third party firewall is causing the problem. Which one are you using?

Starting up in safe mode with networking is a good way to determine if the problem is caused from an installed program, if the problem goes away in safe mode then something was installed that is blocking the connection.

And the internet access for IPv4 and no access for IPv6 is perfectly normal.

*Some* Windows components use IPv6 for *some* functions (clustering is an example), but we disable IPv6 routinely on our systems and we've seen no ill effects.

Are you using MAC filtering on your wireless router? If so, you would get a valid IP configuration from your router but no traffic would be permitted through to the internet.

Check your router and see if it only allows certain MAC addresses to connect. If it does, you can either disable MAC filtering or add the MAC address of your wireless adapter (08-3E-8E-CF-4E-27) to the list of allowed addresses.

I'm really not here to argue the semantics of using IPv6. But if you want to learn more about what it does maybe you should read up on the subject. As you can see many components of Windows will cease to function if you turn off IPv6, including Homegroups.

The Argument against Disabling IPv6
It is unfortunate that some organizations disable IPv6 on their computers running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, where it is installed and enabled by default. Many disable IPv6-based on the assumption that they are not running any applications or services that use it. Others might disable it because of a misperception that having both IPv4 and IPv6 enabled effectively doubles their DNS and Web traffic. This is not true.
From Microsoft's perspective, IPv6 is a mandatory part of the Windows operating system and it is enabled and included in standard Windows service and application testing during the operating system development process. Because Windows was designed specifically with IPv6 present, Microsoft does not perform any testing to determine the effects of disabling IPv6. If IPv6 is disabled on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, or later versions, some components will not function. Moreover, applications that you might not think are using IPv6—such as Remote Assistance, HomeGroup, DirectAccess, and Windows Mail—could be.
Therefore, Microsoft recommends that you leave IPv6 enabled, even if you do not have an IPv6-enabled network, either native or tunneled. By leaving IPv6 enabled, you do not disable IPv6-only applications and services (for example, HomeGroup in Windows 7 and DirectAccess in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are IPv6-only) and your hosts can take advantage of IPv6-enhanced connectivity.

when starting in safe mode the internet works just fine!
im using avast, since it was the only free antivir for windows 8 when i was looking for one. so i guess some software is causing the problem (never had to use safe mode till now, you never stop to learn :) )
ive never changed any MAC setting on the router!

EDIT: there is an option to deactivate the antivirus for a few mins. i tried loading a page on the browser while avast was of but the page didnt load!

I'm not surprised about it working in safe mode.

In that case you will definitely want to remove Avast completely using the special uninstall tool. Very typical problem by the way.

When you installed the Avast anti-virus, Windows should have created a restore point. Go into the system restore console and roll back your installation to the point where you installed Avast and see if that fixes your problem. Windows 8 is extremely fast on the restore process as compared to earlier versions. 5 minutes and you are back to where you started before installing the AV software. I have given up on 3rd party AV programs and just stick with the built in Windows Defender on Win 8 and the Microsoft MSE on Win 7.

These third party A/V's tend to cause countless problems with Windows 8. The preinstalled Windows defender is the way to go if you do not want any problems.

If you had McAfee on your system you should run the McAfee uninstall tool because there may still be traces of it on your system that could cause problems.

Use malware bytes to perform scans plus use the real time security in Windows defender.

The password in question is probably associated with either McAfee Family Protection or McAfee Anti-Theft. In either case if you don't know what it is then I suggest you contact McAfee Technical Support, it's free by phone or online chat here: Services and Support for Home and Office

You'll need to change your Country to wherever you are at the top right corner.

That said, the Network problem is probably easily sorted out, they may be able to fix it. Probably a case of 2 or more networks in Windows Network and Sharing Center and the software needs to be told which one to use. I find disabling any unused ones in Device Manager helps with that. iPV6 being relatively new is causing many people headaches from what I read on the web. Thankfully my ISP hasn't been forced to adopt it, yet.

Well it's unfortunate that the problem came back, still it has absolutely nothing to do with IPv6, the fact that the connection works in safe mode proves that. Although it's obvious to me that removing Avast did have an effect as you already stated.

You will want to remove which ever parts of McAfee are left on your system.

This is the removal tool to use for that.
Download McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool 6.0.151.0 Free - Will remove all McAfee consumer products - Softpedia

If you can go into Device Manager and then to Network Adaptors, disable the Bluetooth adaptor and the Msoft Virtual adaptor you see there under Network Adaptors, as these can sometimes cause connection problems and it's best to disable them when testing.

The McAfee software only identifies whatever Windows Network is seeiing and is perfectly compatible with iPV6, and the removal tool wont remove Anti-Theft, Family Protection or anything that requires an Admin password to release it. That's where support is best for this.

hello!

I managed to remove every component of mcafee after all. Even that extremely annoying parental control thing and the computer works again! now i hope it will stay that way....

Ipv6 negative.

I knew it was an installed AV because of the safe mode with networking test.

It's interesting how obvious the answer is once the problem has been solved. ;)

Please feel free to mark as solved Stellar.

Just to avoid any confusion on the origin of this problem, I'll quote my second post here after I reset winsock and TCP/IP.

thank you for your replies, unfortunately those 2 commands did not solve the problem.
