Cannot connect to WIFI

I have a brand new Lenovo Ideapad Z585. It has a Broadcom Wireless adapter that will not connect to my home wireless network. I have tried everything I can think of to get it to connect to my Netgear router.

When I run Windows diagnostic tools it tells me that there is a problem with the wireless access point, there isn't I am using another laptop with no issues.

I have done a rescue install and gone through the same problems. This time the diagnostic report tells me I have not chosen a network to connect to despite entering the usual SSID, security type and password details in the network centre.

Networks are detected OK, I click on my network, am asked for the password and weither I wanted to share on the network, click ok and after a couple of seconds I am advised 'could not connect to network'

I have spent about 6 hours today trying to resolve this. The ethernet works fine.

I am completely ignorant of WIndows 8, this being my first computer to use it.

If anyone can help I would be very grateful. Thanks.

What type of wireless security and encryption is your router using, WEP, WPA, WPA2 etc. encryption, TKIP, AES etc.

Unplug the wireless router for 2 minutes and then plug it back in...do this from the AC power outlet and not from the back of the unit itself.

Sounds good, and another laptop is connected to this router.

Using your Ethernet connection, have you tried going to Windows update center or the Lenovo site for recent updates for your Lenovo Z585

You might also want to remove "uninstall" any type of preinstalled Anti Virus software that came with your Lenovo.

Ok, I had already uninstalled antivirus software. Powered down the router and still no luck. Will try the ethernet connection and system update. Another laptop is connected to the router.

Thanks for the advice so far.

You may also want to try connecting your new laptop directly to your cable modem to see if that works. I assume you have checked the device manager to make sure you have all devices marked as operational. Also, there are updated drivers available from Lenovo here: Drivers and software - IdeaPad Z585 Notebook

Thanks guys, machine is hooked up via ethernet and downloading windows updates, it is very slow. I am going to let it run, then try the Lenovo update and see what happens (as well as get some sleep!!)

Thanks again and watch this space.

I have come to the conclustion that Windows 8 is not for me. Tried the update, gets to 15%, fails, trys again, gets to 15% fails and reverts.

Lots of information on this, lots of tips/advice, all tried still doesn't work.

Lenovo checked an the machine is 100% current as far as their software is concerned. I am waiting for someone to ring me to talk through wireless issues.

So after many, many hours I am no closer to fixing original issue and have uncovered others.

It would appear that this is some sort of compatability issue with Windows 8 and the computers hardware.

Just how to rectify those issues is the $64k question. One suggestion is to downgrade which is becoming more appealing by the minute.

Is it wrong to assume, after spending so much money, this should have worked out of the box?

I agree that it should have work right out of the box! However, since the Windows 8 installation configuration includes the ability to use the IPV6 protocol by default, I would strongly suggest that you check your network properties to make sure that it is not trying to use IPV6 when your service provider may not support it. The reason I am suggesting this is because I saw a Window 8 generated IPV6 address (somewhere) in my installation initially; however, I can't remember where I saw it. Anyway, my downloads were exceptionally slow at first until I unticked (actually uninstalled) everything except TCP/IP v4 and then everything started to work perfectly.

Good luck.

We haven't even looked at your ipconfig/all yet, it's hardly time to throw in the towel.

If you don't mind, I'd like to continue with my trouble shooting which hasn't even started yet, most likely the preinstalled bloatware just needs to be uninstalled.

Everything we have done so far is about as basic as it gets, so if you can post a screen shot of the ipconfig/all it would be helpful.

This has nothing to do with IPv6.

The Argument against Disabling IPv6
It is unfortunate that some organizations disable IPv6 on their computers running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, where it is installed and enabled by default. Many disable IPv6-based on the assumption that they are not running any applications or services that use it. Others might disable it because of a misperception that having both IPv4 and IPv6 enabled effectively doubles their DNS and Web traffic. This is not true.
From Microsoft's perspective, IPv6 is a mandatory part of the Windows operating system and it is enabled and included in standard Windows service and application testing during the operating system development process. Because Windows was designed specifically with IPv6 present, Microsoft does not perform any testing to determine the effects of disabling IPv6. If IPv6 is disabled on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, or later versions, some components will not function. Moreover, applications that you might not think are using IPv6—such as Remote Assistance, HomeGroup, DirectAccess, and Windows Mail—could be.
Therefore, Microsoft recommends that you leave IPv6 enabled, even if you do not have an IPv6-enabled network, either native or tunneled. By leaving IPv6 enabled, you do not disable IPv6-only applications and services (for example, HomeGroup in Windows 7 and DirectAccess in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are IPv6-only) and your hosts can take advantage of IPv6-enhanced connectivity.

Some good news, I installed the updates one by one which took an age and now have a a fully upto date system. Wifi is connected! however when I click on IE it says not connected. I run the troubleshooter which shows two errors:

1. Problem with wireless adapter or access point.
2. Wi-Fi doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

The Wi-Fi icon is shown connected with excellent signal strength.

Anyone?

This is good, so the updates did help but not quite there yet.

According to this you aren't getting anything from the router here, no valid IP, you are only getting the default IP that Windows uses when it can't pickup an IP from the router.

For testing purposes, Can you go into Device Manage and temporarily disable the Bluetooth adaptor and the Msoft Virtual adaptor as well, under Network Adaptors.

Did you define the routers security and encryption per the link below.

It may help to delete or remove any previous wireless profiles for this connection and create a new one following the link below.

How to Manage Wireless Network Connections & Profiles in Windows 8 | 7 Tutorials

The Network stack, Winsock or TCP/IP may require a complete reset after all the problems you had, the file below will do that for you. :)

According to the ipconfig/all you were never really connected in the first place.

Have you tried updating the firmware on your router?

I have checked that, the router firmware is up to date. Can I take it that there isn't anything wrong with the wireless adapter?

You would have to ask Lenovo about that.

Which trial anti virus software was preinstalled?

I feel like Lenovo should be paying me because I've had to do endless support on their products because of the same problems. Uninstalling all preinstalled bloatware would be my next option.
