I'm confused. My up/down speeds are good, but my ping times are HORRIBLE! Anyone curious as to why this may be?

I have a Linksys E1500 router 1.0 w/ speed boost and a Cisco modem from Charter.

Note: I only have a CAT5 cable running between modem and router right now. I haven't gone out to get a CAT6 yet.

Pingtest results.

Have you tried multiple servers on the tests? Your speed is great, so the ping may not matter. It's sometimes a function of your line quality. The ping and packet loss. If the ping is just because it's 200 miles to the server you tested on, and there isn't significant packet loss, then you have no worries. See Dennis has a higher ping time, and he's less than 100 miles from his server.
If I test at that server I get:

1358012587.png

If I ping test the same server I get:

42590461.png

Mind that server doesn't give me the highest results.

Try pinging Seven Forums (I couldn't ping Eight Forums, it timed out?)

Open an elevated command prompt:

Start> In search box type cmd> Right click on cmd.exe in results above> Type in:

ping www.sevenforums.com

Press enter

Yeah, I just pinged sevenforums and my average was 48ms. Is that simply because of proximity to the server?

I believe so, it is going to take some time for a ping to travel 200 miles, and we don't know how many hops that was either. If you feel the speed, all is well :)

You have good DL speeds too, vrosa. Faster than 93% of your own country!

@ A Guy: I also pinged Facebook and that was 91ms average. So I see what you mean to proximity and hops.

Is it normal for a router connection (wired) to slash the up speed? We have 2 PC's and a Bluray player connected, but if I conect one PC to the modem the up goes to north of 22Mb/s

You still have good download speeds. Those are what I was used to for quite some time. I've noticed that even with my 25-meg connection, my download speeds are largely dependent on how busy the server is that's hosting the file I want to download. For example, if I were to download from, say, Microsoft's server or HP's server, I could download at 25MB/sec. However, this torrent for the proper x64 win8 ISO, for example, is only going at 1.4MB/sec...

It's a bit lower just lately compared to what it has been. It's usually around the 3.8 mark but they had problems at the exchange the other week so I lost contact, only for a few hours, but since re-connection the speed is not as high yet.

I'd like to know if anyone had a similar trouble.

My WiFi is the Atheros Wireless LAN 8.0.238, in a barebone notebook.

First when I installed Win8, I had the normal speed of my net, downloads were fine, ok.

Well, today I've decided to install the drivers and devices from the software, that I used normally in my other OS. For my surprise, I have now very low bandwidth for download - I'm trying to download Java for IE10, and it's taking like 30 minutes some 16Mb...

I've just tried re-installing the drivers, but bandwidth is still low... anyone had similar trouble with that ?

I reinstalled the software using the Windows 7 compatibility mode, I believe it worked...
