Windows 8 WiFi Help

I installed Windows 8 a few days ago and it has been working fine. now, all of the sudden, it can't detect any wifi networks to connect to when it should. The wireless adapter is listed in device manager and shows up in network settings, but will not show any available networks. I have re-installed the drivers, run them in compatibility mode, checked updates, and everything else I can think of. This is driving me crazy, so any help would be appreciated!

I encountered similar problems when I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 'in-place'. It migrated all my WIFI drivers, but they are not truly Windows 8 compatible I guess and there are no version available (yet) from the vendor.

For the most part the WiFi worked fine, but once in a while it didn't work. Then I did something and it worked again. I don't really know what it was that happened and I keep checking for new drivers. For the last few weeks it has been solid so I'm not worried about it any more.

A few weeks ago I went to our local Fry's store and looked for new Windows 8 WiFi adapters for USB ports to replace my 2-year-old Windows 7 model. There are none available. An on-line search and a search of the Microsoft Windows 8 compatibility center also reveal none available.

To follow up on my last post, I looked over some of the things I did:

Originally I had the network set up as a public network, but I don't remember what I did to set that up that way.

I changed it from Public to Private, removed all references to HomeGroups and killed the HomeGroup services and removed the Homegroup from the navigation bar.

After these changes the WiFi seemed to work better.

What I find odd and disturbing is that I have not yet found a way to view the network protocols attached to the adapter.

There use to be a network property that displayed stuff like TCPIP, NetBios, etc. in Windows 7. I can't seem to get that to display anymore, but the networking 'just works'.

I've put all that stuff off until I get some real Windows 8 network drivers, then I'll investigate.

Did you notice this problem starting after some Windows updates?

Luckily I don't keep many files on my laptop so I just re-installed windows and everything works fine now. Thanks for all the replies!
