Unable to connect old Internet to new laptop

I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8 already installed and it's basically setup except I'm unable to switch my current Internet connection (normal modem, not wireless) to this new laptop as it keeps suggesting I setup a wireless network to use the Internet. Is this really mandatory or can I continue using my current connection, and if so, how? Or can I set up a wireless connection without buying a wireless router?

Any help is appreciated - I'm not great with technology.

    thanks!

Do you have an external switch to turn wifi on/off? Tell us more about the make/model of your computer.

Does it have an external switch to turn wifi on/off? HP's used to have a utility to activate wifi, bluetooth, etc. Look in Control panel for anything HP that might have to do with wifi.

There's a key on the laptop that I think is for wifi?

Not sure about the key, but also look in the notifications area in your desktop taskbar. Seems like the utility used to show up there.

Edit: Oh, I see you clarified--airplane mode key. You could try putting the computer into airplane mode also.
