    Web-browser will not load webpages

    Hello,

I just built a PC for my boss with Windows 8x64 and he is running into a major issue. No matter what web browser he tries to use (internet explorer, firefox, chrome) he can never load webpages. They constantly time out after attempting to load for several minutes.

He definitely has access to the internet because he can still send and receive emails, transfer files on Dropbox, and run remote access software. I even pinged a couple websites in DOS and his latency is just fine.

I just recently built another computer with the exact same components but installed Windows 7 and there were no problems so this is definitely a Windows 8 issue.

What is causing his computer to not load webpages?

This is a fairly typical problem and usually has to do with winsock or the TCP/IP stack requiring a reset.

Copy/paste the following two commands, into an elevated command prompt one at a time, hit enter after each one then reboot your machine. Test to see if your browsers now function as they should.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit
    (reset TCP/IP stack)

Unfortunately I won't be able to try your advice until Monday, but I'm not sure if that will be a permanent fix. He began experiencing this problem the same day that he installed Windows 8. He even reinstalled Windows 8 and it had the same problem again. Is there some file that is so corrupted that it needs a winsock reset every time he turns the computer on?

I'd have to see the ipconfig/all from this machine in order to tell what the problem is.

I figured out the problem. My boss installed Avast on his computer. I uninstalled it and it took care of the problem. Thanks for the tip earlier though.

Avast explains it, very typical problem from pretty much all third party A/V's with Windows 8.

If Avast was mentioned I would have recommended to remove it first thing. Glad you have the problem sorted out.

Haha well I didn't realize he had it on there either until I took a look at it today. Once again, thanks for your tip though.

I have Avast also. I never though about Avast being the culprit because I have 2 other machines that are windows 8 running Avast and they don't run into this issue. With mine I basically have my computer after a few days of it being on or hours no website will load at all on any browser. Pinging and everything else works fine though. Very weird. Anyways I printed this for later to remember!

I have Windows 8 and no matter what browser I use, it takes a long time to load any page on a website. It had worked great until about a month ago. We have two other computers in the house (one with XP and one with 7) they seem not to have issues, so I don't think it is a connection issue. The XP...
