Recenty purchased 2 new PC's with windows 8.
Setup workgroup, connected to server via work group. Saved credentials to system. Was able to access files first day.

Day two: try to access server and Win 8 prompts for username and password. I input UN and PW and system tells me its wrong. Even though I know its right.

I have tired many things with firewall and outbound security on WIN 8 machine, but it will not connect to win2k server via workgroup as it denies password.

Anyone know how to fix/resolve this issue (hating windows 8 right now)

@ Parman - I did read that, but it didnt explain how to manage it from the workstation. The settings that Jimbo spoke about are not in Win 8 on my PC's

Assuming this Windows 8 Enterprise machine isn't locked down with Group Policy.

This type of problem usually requires that you change the lanman server parimeters in order to get Windows 8 working with older servers. Do these adjustments on the Windows 8 machines that needs to connect to the server.

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy

Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Set to Send LM & NTLM responses only

Set the Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption

Reboot all machines after making the adjustment.

These settings?

Correct. I go into the, control panel > administrative tools > End! There is nothing more after that. There are no such settings on the workstation

Basic doesn't have those security options although it is possible to make those adjustments in the registry. :)

This works on Windows 7 basic and Home Premium but I have not tested this out on Windows 8 basic.

You should back up the registry before making any changes.

There needs to be a DWORD named LmCompatibilityLevel set to value of 2 at
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

If the key doesn't exist...

Click run type> regedit and navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa then choose to create DWORD named LmCompatibilityLevel then set the value to 2.

Although it may be worth trying different levels if 2 doesn't work.

LM compatibility levels as described > LmCompatibilityLevel

More info on how NTLM works and why it's required.

I remember that fix worked in Win 7. I tried it in Win 8, but it didnt work. Still cannot access server via workgroup. Ugh

Have you tried using different levels instead of just level 2, other levels may be worth a try, try using level 4 or level 1. :)

I'm sure you are aware that connecting Windows 8 simple or basic to a Domain Server is not supported.

Needless to say but if you were running Windows 8 pro accessing this server would be no problem once the correct NTLM permissions were set.

I did. I ran from 0-5 to see if any would change. Maybe ill upgrade then.. just seems silly that it wont connect.

Well it's not supported for Windows 8 basic to connect to a Domain server. It may be the 128bit encryption but I'm not sure the registry setting for that.

DRCMessiah, YOU don't use that setting(s) when you first setup your network, you got a special code, should of looked like a Microsoft COA number groupings that you WERE told to copy down and keep in a safe place. THIS is WHAT Windows is LOOKING for. If you didn't save/keep it I feel sorry for you buddy, you'll HAVE to do it ALL over again.

HUH? There was no code on setup. If your talking about the homegroup settings...I am not using homegroup. Its a workgroup environment. The workstation is looking for rights to connect to server 2k. It worked day one, but then stopped working and has since rejected the correct UN and PW. I just upgraded the systems to PRO and will see if chev65's fix works now.

there is no DC. its a workgroup. I am just looking to connect to the shared files on W2k server via Admin /password. It keeps telling me the UN and PW are wrong. Its something in windows 8 (i upgraded to pro just now) The server shows events as connecting correctly.. but the workstation still says its wrong UN and PW
