Windows 8 PC can't see network drive

I use a network hard drive connected to my router for media storage, and it never had any problems when I ran Windows 7. I recently upgraded one PC to Windows 8, and now that PC cannot connect to the network drive. The drive does not show up under "Network" in the explorer sidebar. It still shows up as a mapped drive under "Network Locations," (which was set up before the upgrade) but Windows 8 sees it as Offline. The drive still works perfectly with the other PCs in the house (all of which still run Windows 7), so it definitely seems to be a problem with 8. Any thoughts on what might have changed between 7 and 8 that is preventing the PC from seeing the network drive?

Edit: It may help to add that all of the PCs and the network drive are connected to the router via ethernet cable (in other words, it's not a wifi issue), and the Windows 8 PC can see the other PCs on the network with no problem.

    Hi there
I had a problem with W8 seeing network drives.

Follow the link in this thread -- It solved my problem. Suggestion by chev65 worked fine.

It's not a wifi / LAN issue or even Firewall issue.

You might need to do the same to the network PC if it's W7 --I didn't need to change the settings on the W7 PC just the W8 PC. Reboot ALL machines after doing the fix though (ALL machines the W8 needs to access drives on not just the W8 one).

For your network drive which is connected to the router than via a physical PC you might need to re-start the router and the drive after applying the W8 changes. I had a wireless network printer too so I re-started the router and printer - then it was also fine and accessible by the W8 machine.

I think you might have better luck seeing that drive if it was connected to a SATA port on one of those networked machines.

That seems to have done the trick, Jimbo. Thanks!

This router must be using the same outdated Lan manager authentication levels as the old servers.

I'm wondering how Windows 7 navigated through this routers security because it should be using the same lanman settings as Windows 8. Maybe the default settings are different.

I didn't get any help from bullguard but have been searching and the answer to my problem (firewall blocking access) is pretty simple:
