I just bought and set up a new Dell computer with windows 8. I set sharing and permissions. From the new computer I can access on my network another Windows XP computer and transfer files appropriately. From the XP computer however I can not find the Windows 8 computer. Any suggestions?

You will need to change the Workgroup name on either the XP machine or the Windows 8 machine so they are both matching, by default XP uses MSHOME and Windows 8 uses Workgroup for the workgroup name.

You will need to turn on network discovery and file and printer sharing in the Advanced Sharing settings at the Network and Sharing center on the Windows 8 machine.

It's easiest to use the Public folders for sharing with the XP machine but you can share out Library's by choosing the Everyone setting in the Homegroup folders.

Actually I resolved it by going to network places on the XP machine, searching for computer and entering the name and password. Thanks for the suggestion anyway. The XP machine was labled as Workgroup so I guess it was set up to work.

OK good, you must have had password protected sharing turned on.
