Ok, that kind of makes sence, at work now might not get the chance to try that for a few days, will let you know, thanks.
Do you think that once i connect, if I can, I could turn security off and it will still connect?

Did that (turning on security) work?

Didn't have a lot of time gave it 1 quick try enabled WPA/WPA2 on router, then tried to connect. Windows said it was determining network requirements, then turned off the wireless adapter.
Really don't have a lot of time to mess with it till the weekend, things like job, commute, family get in the way but will try again over the weekend and get back to you.

Ok guys, finally got it connected. First I turned off windows defender and disabled the firewall, went to manually connect to wireless network, and put in the network info,SSID, WPA2-personal, encryption AES, and the security key. Then go to Networks, right click on the network you want and click properties, insert the same info there under security, under connection select all, click ok then connect and it connected.
Thanks to all for your assistance

I'm quite certain that it's not required to bring down the firewall and turn off defender in order to make a wireless connection. If that were true then everybody would have to do that. Just remember to turn them back on.

Most likely just enabling security on the router and typing in the appropriate wireless security settings into the wireless profile was enough to fix this problem. Windows 8 won't be able to connect with unsecured networks and won't connect to WEP secured networks as well.

Anyway, it seems like it worked much better with the wireless security enabled but no big surprise there.

You can mark this as solved if you like. Glad you are online again.

The thing that still boggles my mind is, why didn't I have this problem with the beta or preview versions?

Most likely because the security settings weren't finalized in the CP and earlier versions. Not to mention the drivers needed to be approved for Windows 8 and those drivers won't allow connection to unsecured networks.

You definitely want to keep the network secure, the way you had it, anyone from outside could connect and then access your router and your machine.

Agree, when I first set it up was not worried, live in the woods, 2 dogs.
Sitting in my driveway for web access would be noticed. Adding the security is probably a good idea, just had to re-connect all other W-less devices with security settings. Like I should have at setup anyway. Sometimes shortcuts are not the best path. NAVY taught me, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"....well it weren't broke till now.
    Thanks again for the help.
