Low speed internet despite high speed provided by ISP

    Dear friends

Could you help me figure out why it is that I have trouble browsing in high speed despite the fact that the wireless adapter receives data at 1 Mbps minimum? I haven't been able to watch videos on Youtube, read the news etc because the browser takes ages to load the full page. I checked which applications are connected and they haven't exchanged much data as you can see below:

    Excuse my English!

    Thank you.

Don't you think that running bit torrent in the back ground has something to do with this problem or is that just for testing connection?

Between bit torrent and using an outdated wireless G connection you really can't expect much here, you may be paying for a faster service but the use of 802.11g is a bottle neck for this connection. Going to 802.11n router and wireless adaptor would be much better.

Looking around for a better driver might help.

I don't think Bit torrent has any influence here but it is OK. On the other hand, this router has always intrigued me, sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. It's an old Lynksys router that has worked for years now. I have a D-link N wireless adapter but I haven't noticed any improvements, to be honest, the built-in G adapter works a little 'faster'. I will see if I can convince the building manager to buy a new router, if that is possible at all.

I'd say that in general you won't be having good connection speeds when running torrents with a wireless connection.

If you have access to the router you can try changing wireless channels and use the non mixed mode 802.11g settings to improve things. Windows 8 will probably work better using WPA2 security with AES encryption.

With wireless G connection speeds limited to 54Mbps you are short on bandwidth so going to wireless N hardware would probably improve things dramatically although you would need to use the wireless N only settings and use channel bonding.

If you are downloading or seeding in the bittorrent, it can make the browsing slow no matter how high speed the internet is.. If there is no activity going in the bittorrent client then in normal cases it won’t affect the browsing speed. It doesn't matter that you have an 802.11n wireless adapter if your router is old and supports only 802.11g. Your adapter can receives only what your router sends. Check if your router supports 802.11g wireless mode. As already mentioned in above comments try changing channel to one with least interference. Also check in a different wireless device. Also try re configuring the device. If still no improvement try to get a newer router from a friend , configure and try it. I think that will pinpoint the issue to, whether it is a router issue or internet service provider issue.

Did you try Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test with and without torrent running ? What is the bandwidth your ISP promised ?
1 Mbps may not (and it isn't) enough to watch higher resolution Youtube videos when doing just that, let alone downloading something else at same time.
