Solved Drive Sharing in Windows 8 Home Premium

I can share files and folders both ways on my home network between my Win 8 desktop and my Win 7 laptop at will. But I can't share a drive (S:) on the desktop with the laptop. I've always been able to do this between Win 7 and XP machines. The shared drive (S:) shows up on the laptop but when I try to access it I get a message saying something like, "Windows cannot access the file..... You do not have permission to access....." I have the permissions set to read/write.

Is there something special I need to do under Win 8 to share the drive?

Thank you.

on the desktop with the laptop.

the problem is probably that you setup Windows 8 with something like xyz@live.com as user name , you need to create an user with the same username and password as the one in the Windows 7.

Thank you.

But wouldn't that affect the sharing of files and folders also. That is doing just fine.

The user name on the desktop is Main. On the laptop it is Jack. That is the way it was under 7 and XP.

You do not need to set up your machine with the same password and user name in order to simply share files.

This misconception is simply not true.

You share drives the same way as with Windows 7, by using both the sharing permissions and the security permission tabs. The link below shows you how.

Most likely you haven't yet gone into the Security tab to make the appropriate adjustments there.

Thank you very much. I guess I had forgotten the Security Tab step. That solved the problem and I have marked the thread solved.

Thanks again

That is good to hear JJG, everyone seems to forgot about the Security tab so it's a common problem. :)
