Can't network but can share drive

I have a XP machine that I can see the shared folders via network on Win 8. I cannot see the XP machine on the Win 8 via network - Win 8 says "no network" even though I am on the internet through wireless. I can map the Win 8 to shared folders on the XP. I can also use "net view" to see the XP machine from Win 8. So why won't the Win 8 network?

EDIT: I just looked and the Win8 still says I am not connected to any networks even through I can access the other machine. What is going on????

I assume that you enabled Network Discovery and also file and printer sharing for the Windows 8 machine in the Advanced Settings at the Network and Sharing Center.

You would need to make sure that the Workgroup names on both the XP and Windows 8 machines are the same.

By default the Workgroup names don't match so you would need to change the Workgroup name on at least one of those machines to match the other one.

Got all that done. One thing I noticed is the option to set share for the device is missing on the left click.

BTW: I can access everything on the Win 8 from the XP.

Have you shared something on the XP?

I have. Something else has happened in that the XP machine says I don't have permission to connect to "Workgroup" and the Win 7 (doing more checks) shows the XP machine on the network map. The Win 8 will not even give me the map.

As chev65 mentioned, are both computers part of WORKGROUP? If not, they need to be--or at least have the same "workgroup" name. Is the Win8 machine set to the Private network profile?

They are both "workgroup. I cannot set the profile name in the Win8 machine because it does not give me access to any network settings; the "Advanced settings" only list "Private" and not "Public". I have both machines disconnected from "homegroup".

Ok, yes, it says private I presume. I'll be gone for a while, but will try to get back to you. chev65 probably will too

I don't know why because I have been playing ALOT, but everything is working. I guessing it was something on the XP machine; I looked in the setting and changed "Computer Description" to the same as the ID and now things are working. Has anyone heard of this?????? This is a old Latitude D810 that I have been using for years on company networks and industrial systems - best machine I have ever had.
