Well, so much for it working; now Win8 will not even see a shared folder on its' own machine and I have not made any changes; it just stopped working.

Fighting more than 1 problem. XP will only connect if I go to Change ID and tell it to connect to a home network; this allowed communications between Win7 and XP.

Win8 is full of problems. I had to uninstall the Wi-Fi and reinstall it which allowed me to tell it to "share" (something I have never seen before); this allowed reading of Win8 shared folders on same machine, but still did not allow a connection to the network either as workgroup or homegroup - it says "this computer cannot connect to homegroup". I cannot find any setting that allows me to disconnect from the homegroup and disabling services doesn't help.

XP is good if set as a home network. Make sure the Win8 machine is set as a Private network.

I'm networking with another machine in my network, windows xp and 8. Make sure you are in the same workgroup. You can do that by right clicking computer, properties, advanced settings.

All machines are reading each other now, but the Win8 tells me that I cannot connect to a homegroup and that I am not connected to a network even though the PCs read each other. I think the problem may be the driver for the wireless card. I am going to do some looking for a Dell N1515 for Win8.

What I need is someone to tell me how to connect to Homegroup at this point and it may solve the whole issue; Win8 is telling me that "this computer cannot connect to homegroup". Do not confuse this with the issue of connecting to the XP machine, that I will solve later.:

This is where I am at. I can communicate between Win7 and XP with no problem and see the network map. XP will only see files on Win8 and Win8 will not see files on XP. Win8 refuses to connect to any network including Homegroup therefore I cannot change public or private. It appears to be set to private in advanced settings because public is not visible - but no proof.

There is more than likely a hardware issue with Wi-Fi because it was supported in Win7 when MS supported XP. Now MS no longer supports XP and they are the only ones that make the Win8 driver for Dell 1515-N. I can get on the internet with no problem which makes this a real puzzle.

Forget about HomeGroup. It won't do you any good with Win8/XP. If you still have a problem, then you need to fix it without using HomeGroup Are you actually calling anything HomeGroup in yours settings? i wouldn't.

Nope, no homegroup in any settings. The problem I am having is that I cannot connect to any network and homegroup is saying: "you cannot connect to homegroup unless set to 'private'" and I cannot get to any settings that will allow me to set "private" or "public" because I cannot connect to any networks.

What causes it to say that? You shouldn't be trying to connect to anything called homegroup. Are you somehow trying to do so? And, whether you can change it or not, does your Win8 machine show that you are using the Private network profile.

I don't know if I am using Private networking or not because I cannot access anything that tells me. It simply says that I am not connected to any network. The homegroup deal is that I am just trying to get something to work and nothing is.

Edit: The only thing that I can do is get on the internet via Wi-Fi.
