Have updated to 8 from XP. Can't use wifi. I can connect but wifi says off and I cannot work out to turn on. I have a generic lap top that never missed a beat under XP. With XP the driver was, per the cd, wireless networking solution by msi. When I check after upgrade it now says ralink technology11g mini pci. Like a lot of people, I have had problems with updates failing, whoever doing them in lots of 5 I have got them through, except 1 from ralink 11g minipci. Greatly appreciate if someone could tell me how to turn wifi on, or how to rerun failed update for driver. I am not super cluey however can handle all the basics. Bob.

Maybe try this:
Click start and type "ncpa.cpl" and hit enter (or you can go to My Documents and type in the address bar "ncpa.cpl" and hit enter) then right click on Wi-Fi or your internet and click enable. Do not know if this will work but you can give it a try.

Thanks Alex. It is working now, even though it says wifi off. I went to settings, change pc settings and clicked on the off bar and even though it did not change to on, the wifi worked, very peculiar mama. I will try your suggestion as well and let you know. Thanks very much for your reply. Windows 8 is obviously a long way from being a viable alternative to android or apple.

After upgrading to 8, did your wifi ever work? Have you checked in Device Manager to see if you have an obvious problem? You may need to update your wireless adapter driver or even its firmware. A simple, expedient, and inexpensive (in both time and money) solution might be to buy a USB wireless adapter. If you do, then be as sure as you can that it is compatible with Win8.

Thank you znod. As above it is now working, but still says off. Can ups tell me how to update wireless network adaptor and firmware. I now realise windows 8 is not for ordinary computer users, only for people that that get inside microsofts head and change the system. I have used every system from XP to windows 7 over 15 years and never had the dramas like windows 8. Thanks for any help. Bob in Oz.

You are very welcome. I am confused about your wifi working, but staying off. That sounds a tad like Schrödinger's cat. I think the cat lives in Oz too. I've always wanted to visit Oz, but its's hard to get there through the wormhole. :D On the driver, go in Device Manager, to the Network Adapters section and see if there appears to be a problem with your wireless adapter. If not, then you can still try to update it via that area. For the firmware issue, get your adapter's make and model# (probably available in the same Device Manager area) and search the manufacturer's website for a firmware update for your adapter. If you find one, the instructions probably also will be found. If you find you are not getting anywhere fast enough, then I'd buy a USB wireless network adapter as mentioned above. And, keep in mind that neither of the possible fixes I have mentioned may be required to solve your problem.

I keep meaning to ask. Do you remember what the "ralink technology11g mini pci" adapter was called before Win8. It might be helpful to know.

Hi Znod, if that is not your real first name, my apologies, if it is, it a great name. Have not tried your latest suggestion, it is too hot , 40 Celsius in Sydney, near 50 down south and fires every where, 100 homes lost, too hard to think about Microsoft 8. Talk to you later in the new year, thanks for your help. All the best Bob

Thanks for the update. znod is not my real name. I have not heard about the fires; I am very sorry. Hope you and your family are out of harms way. On OZ, I didn't know--Australia referred to as Oz. Don't know how I missed that all these years. I was making reference to The Wizard of Oz. :) I have always wanted to visit your Oz too though.

Hi znod. I have updated all my drivers since I last spoke to you, and w8 seems to be working a bit better now. Wi-fi still says off but it is working ok.I have 2 issues you may be able to help me with or point me in the right direction. I have a message that says the video card is not compatible with W8, and the other issue is when I load a DVD it does not auto play or come up with window giving suggestions how to play, in the others windows system you use to be able to go to my computer and click on the D drive, but I can't see my computer on W8. I have gone into auto play and changed the settings for DVD but that hasn't,t helped. Thanks for any advise and I hope 2013 is a good year for you. Bob

Hi Bob:

I am glad that the Wifi is better. On the DVD issue, get Widows Media Center free still for awhile. See if you can play your DVD's using this medium. Auto play, etc., may come up given installation of Windows Media Center. On seeing your computer, go to the desktop, right click on it, choose personalize, and use the link that allows you to choose the icons to show on your desktop. I show them all, but you'd certainly, IMO, want to show at least Computer, Control Panel, and Recycle Bin. Double click on Computer and you'll see your drives. I am not sure what to do about the Video Card incompatibility. Apparently, it is working well enough that you are not bothered too much. You could try updating it driver or firmware. But, if nothing is too bad, then you might want to wait awhile. You could eventually decide to replace the card.

I hope all is good for you on Oz. The new year is great for me. I saw, on TV, a video of the recent huge dust storm. Recently, we watched a two-part series on the USA dustbowl era--characterized by, among other really bad things, huge dust storms. I hope your fire and dust storm proclivity goes away soon.

Best, z

Thanks Z, sending this from work, sorted out the desk top as you said, that's great. Still have the sound prob with cd & dvd not opening, as, it seems, are many, many others on this forum. Do you think it would help going to one of those driver download sites for $29.95 per year. I did try DriverUpdate, but they were not helpful, and I did get my money refunded. Advanced Driver updates has very good reviews, what do you think. Bob

Glad you got your desktop fixed up. I have never used a service of the type you mention. I am skeptical about you getting much for your money. And, I probably would be fearful of using what they suggest in a variety of cases. Do you have info about your video/display card/adapter? Go run > (from desktop or metro) > type "msconfig" > Select "OK" > Tools > System Information > Launch > Components (and open Components) > Display > See what "Name" comes up. You could get the same "Name" using Device Manager and looking at "Display Adapters." Are you having an "uncomfortable" video/display problem?
