Is there any program I can install that has mySQL and PHP (apache optional) to host a website using the IP of my computer? Just host a site without the domain name, just IP.

This might work,, not used it for what you are wanting,,, but it might work??

apache friends - xampp

And it's portable, so you can drop it on an external drive and run it from anywhere.

You should read the entire FAQ and note the following.,....

As mentioned at another place, XAMPP is not meant for production use but only for developers in a development environment. XAMPP is configured is to be as open as possible and to allow the web developer anything he/she wants. For development environments this is great but in a production environment it could be fatal.

Here a list of missing security in XAMPP:

The MySQL administrator (root) has no password.
The MySQL daemon is accessible via network.
phpMyAdmin is accessible via network.
The XAMPP demopage is accessible via network.
The default users of Mercury and FileZilla are known.

All points can be a huge security risk. Especially if XAMPP is accessible via network and people outside your LAN. It can also help to use a firewall or a (NAT-) router. In case of a router or firewall, your pc is normally not accessible via network. It is up to you to fix these problems. As a small help there is the "XAMPP Security console".

Please secure XAMPP before publishing anything online. A firewall or an external router are only sufficient for low levels of security. For slightly more security, you can run the "XAMPP Security console" and assign passwords.

If you want have your XAMPP accessible from the internet, you should go to the following URI which can fix some problems:

Windows 8 pro has IIS, you can install MySQL and PHP and you have yourself a web server to host your website.

You won't be able to host a site accessible from outside your LAN using the IP of the machine as that will be using one of the local IP profiles. But it will be accessible on your LAN.

You can use the IP address assigned by your ISP if it is static or use DynDNS, you will have to configure your router to direct requests on port80 to your machine.

That is an very much an over simplification, but if you are not familiar with firewalls, hosting, and server security you will be opening up your system to be extremely vulnerable.

I set up xampp and it works for http://localhost and http://192.168.1.200:80, but it won't work on my public IP 50.133.171.158. It just won't load. I went to my netgear settings page and forwarded port 80 to 192.168.1.200 but it still won't work.

Many ISPs block port 80 inbound.

Also what steveb said.

xampp I do believe will work. But IIS (which I forgot is part of Windows and just needs to be enabled) is a lot more secure out of the box.

Hi there
For Hosting I'd use a Linux server -- you can set up LAMP -- even if you don't know Linux this is fairly easy to set up and saves all the hassle of using Windows IIS etc etc,

For a beginner the UBUNTU LAMP server is probably the easiest to set up.

Step By Step Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise) LAMP Server Setup*|*Ubuntu Geek

The advantage with this is that it's all 100% FREE open source software. -- If you use IIS you'll have to install W8 PRO etc.

You could even set this up as a VIRTUAL MACHINE server so you existing W8 system will be fine for hosting this. Install Ubuntu as a VM using VMware vmplayer (free) or virtual box (also free).

Tutorials are available on creating and using Virtual machines.

This IMO is the best bet and easy to test as well.

To access the server outside your LAN use something like DYNDNS and if there is trouble with inbound HTTP ports being blocked use Putty and tunnelling.

Using PuTTY to create an SSH tunnel
