Why im not on Private Network ?

Hi,

I m sharing 2 pcs with simple 10/100 wired switch.
My one pc is WinXp sp2 and other is Win 8 Ent 64 bit.

Problem is , in windows,it is not allowing me to select network type (Home/Work/Public). And it has automatically reported my network as public.. i dont understand why..?
please help

Win Xp IP 192.168.1.5
Win 8 IP 192.168.1.6

as per that tutorial i have tried changing the TYPE... but when i click the networks option in CHARM bar..it displays Unidentified Network ..and LIMITED Connectivity msg. is displayed... so no sharing (right click) available

ok. thanx..will try that way...

one more thing on the same network... though it is set to public network i can share the drive on my Win8 PC with XP pc... but from xp pc i can not access this share through network places and then PC name... it shows NO ACCESS error... but if access the Win8 PC from RUN and with IP Add. \\192.x.x.x then it allows the share... (attach2)

and in win XP pc,the share folders are not listed under Local Network but are listed under Internet (Attach 1)

The real problem here is that you have an unidentified network which automatically defaults to a public network.

I would have to see the ipconfig/all from this machine in order to figure out what is causing the unidentified network problem.

Do you have iTunes installed on this machine?

Which anti virus software are you using?

i have managed to resolve the issue of unidentified network.. it was due to wrong Gateway i supplied (to disconnect pc from Internet)..but now it shows normal network icon.

i do not have iTunes installed... and currently as this is new installation,i m using windows defender and nothing extra

The ipconfig/all would probably would have told me that the gateway wasn't correct.

Yes typing an incorrect default gateway into the IPv4 settings will definitely cause connection and sharing problems to occur.

Not to mention the inability to change over to a private network as I mentioned in my first post which did answer your topic question quite completely. > Why im not on Private Network ? =The real problem here is that you have an unidentified network which automatically defaults to a public network.

The problem may come back unless you disable the Bonjour service in Windows services, iTunes installs it.
