Solved Internet Connection but browsers do not work.

Hello,

I have just recently installed Windows 8 Pro and have had no problems, except my internet browsers.
I am connected to the internet and can use some programs using it such as skype, but none of my browsers will work. (Internet explorer, Google chrome, Firefox.)
In google chrome i get Error 138, and have researched that and found that it is apparently a problem with your antivirus blocking it, although I have gone into my Bullguard's firewall and allowed all browsers as permitted programs.
I also allowed them all in the computers own control panel. I have also found that another answer to it is unchecking the proxy setting in internet options, although that makes no change.
Can someone else please post another possible solution, I will be happy to answer questions.

I would completely disable all third-party security items (AV, malware, and firewall) and let the Win8 security features take over protection for awhile as a test.

This one has been coming up pretty often lately. Usually just resetting winsock and the TCP/IP stack fixes this problem.

1. Open up the command line utility as Admin and enter each command one at a time :

netsh winsock reset catalog (resets winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (resets TCP/IP stack)

2. Reboot your PC

znod's solution worked for some bizarre reason, as it was an allowed program in Bullguard anyway. Also even if I disabled Bullguard it would still not work. Happy now it is working, and thank you both.

I've done this. The problem is that it only works one time and then stops working again. It's a problem with my email as well.

Hey just like in the main thread I can use skype (but I can't see the skype home) and I can see my friends who are online but can't go into store or anything else and no browser will work I have tried all the methods listed but nothing has worked, please help would be appreciated

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop that has had this issue in the past. Previously, I was able to correct the browser problem using the methods outlined by Chev65. This time, after restarting the laptop, the browser works for about a minute.... then nothing. All Win8 tiles continue to update so I have internet connectivity. Malware scan came up clean. Any thoughts?

As an additional observation, safe mode with networking "cures" the problem. Regular rebooting generates the symptom (no browser functionality -- IE or Firefox) again.

In my case, Ztruker's post led me to disabling the Norton Suite which was apparently factory installed. Disabling cured the issue.

Good going, glad you got it fixed.

I'd suggest uninstalling Norton completely (download the Norton Removal Tool) then use the built in Windows Defender or one of the other free AV programs but not McAfee.
