    Homegroup

Some times the home group icon will be displayed on my desktop screen and some times it disappears.

    why is it so?

When and where on the display screen? On the desktop? When going to network?

    Yes on the desktop.

    It will be there sometimes.

My laptop is totally virus free

Very strange. I have never seen a HomeGroup icon appear on the desktop--intermitantly or otherwise. Don't think I can help--except to suggest things too big given the magnitude of the problem.

I have recently encountered this phenomenon.
The icon appears and disappears apparently of its own volition.
Apparently Control Panel\Appearance and Personalisation\Personalisation\Desktop Icon Settings should contain an option to enable/disable this icon but on my system it does not.

    Puzzled.

    Phantom Homegroup Icon

I too have seen the homegroup icon come and go! It appears on my desktop in the place where any new icon might appear [such as a PDF saved to desktop]. If I sort the desktop icons by name it moves with other icons to alphabetic sequence but if I right-click on it there is no option to delete it from the desktop. If I drag it to a new place on the desktop it will not stick in the new place! There is no option that I have found to remove this icon or make it permanent. Perhaps there is a flag in the registry somewhere? Then next time I boot it disappears! What is happening? KJ

Maybe this is a clue? ... This morning I saw a Google Earth icon appear on my desktop. When I tried to delete it would not move to the Recycle Bin. I think it was placed on the desktop by an overnight Google Earth update. I switched out of desktop to the Windows 8 tiles page [to come to this forum] and then back to the desktop view. The Google Earth icon had disappeared! When I checked the Recycle Bin it was there ... BUT the restore address was C:\Users\Public\Desktop! Not sure why anything would be on the Public Desktop but evidently that's where it was. Perhaps the Homegroup icon is on some other [possibly hidden] desktop? Does Windows "merge" desktop views? I can't check my theory because it isn't visible at the moment. KJ

For those with the HomeGroup icon on the desktop, you might see if this may be able to help remove it.

To be frank its presence doesn't bother me but what pissed me off was that it forever changed position after a reboot so rather than have to re-sort after each restart I decided to remove it.
I've run the REG updates a number of times but the darned thing keeps coming back.

EDIT: Just discovered that "Allow themes to change desktop icons" was set on.

That may account for my problems.

    Hey Jim,

In addition, sometimes refreshing (F5) the desktop gets rid of the homegroup desktop icon.
