    Slow Internet!

    Hi,

I purchased a new motherboard/CPU to go with Windows 8 Pro when it came out. And I have come across a peculiar problem. The internet speed is extremely slow. Doing a speed test at speedtest.net, and my local ISP speedtest, gives me results of about 2mbps. I currently have a broadband connection of 50mbps. All other computers in my house (wired and wireless) give a speed test result of 40-50mbps

The upload speed is not affected.

    My hardware:

    Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe
    - Has a 1GB realtek NIC, and an Intel 1GB NIC, and even built in wireless.
    - Speeds are consistent with every network connection, wired, wireless, doesn't matter.
    Intel Core i7-3770K (not Overclocked)
    16GB DDR3
OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 240GB (PCI Express SSD card)
Nvidia GTX 680 x2 in SLI
    1000W Corsair PSU

    A bit of history:

I performed a fresh install of Windows 8 a few days after it was released. I noticed the slower speed right away. If I were watching a youtube video on one internet tab, then loading a webpage would take over 30 seconds. I performed a few speed tests at that time, and they ranged from 1.5-2mbps.
The interesting thing, is that if I run a speed test immediatly after restart, or driver install. It does give me a result of 50mbps.
Transfering a large file over my network to another computer gives me at least a 400mbps transfer rate. So the wiring and network is functioning at a full 1GBps

Here is what I have tried:

    - Update both NICs to newest and older drivers. Ranged from windows 7 drivers, to a few different versions of Windows 8 drivers, some from Asus, others directly from Intel/Realtek.
    - Installed Windows 7 Ultimate. Speed tests ran perfect at 50mbps consistently.
    - Changed the power profile to 'High Performance'
    - Skipped the router and connected directly to the modem
    - Disabled all non-microsoft services from starting, and a few microsoft ones that I know I can skip.
    - Updated Bios firmware on my motherboard
    - Fresh installs of Windows 8, no difference
    - New chipset drivers
    - Different browsers, Chrome, IE, Firefox. (This download speed also affects my usenet downloading)
    - Created a local group policy to prevent windows update from reserving some of my bandwidth
    - Resetting IPV4 settings
    - Changed DNS servers
    - Performed the built in Microsoft network and hardware diagnostics

In safe mode, I do get 50mbps download. But even after a fresh install in normal operation it gets throttled.

Thats from the top of my head. I have been through every forum post that I can find online regarding slow speeds. Most are related to driver issues from what I read. But mine clearly are not.

An interesting fact. When I updated my network card last night to a new version, my speed returned to normal (50mbps) the entire night until I rebooted and tried again in the morning.

This is painfully slow and beyond frustrating. Without a fix, I will be forced to return to Windows 7, which is not a solution.

Lets find a solution for this.

Which A/V software did you install on this system?

The fact that this problem doesn't occur in safe mode indicates that an installed program is causing the problem, most likely A/V software.

I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security 2013. It does support Windows 8.

In any event you will want to uninstall Kaspersky using it's uninstall tool as it's the most likely cause of the problem.

Unbelievable! Getting rid of Kaspersky solved the problem! I've been using Kaspersky for so long that I didn't even think that it could be causing issues.

    Thanks so much!

I've seen these types of problems so many times I've lost count so it was easy to make the assumption that Kaspersky was causing the issue. Sure saves us a lot of time chasing our tails and wasting time with network diagnoses when the actual cause of the problem is right there in front of us.

You may have luck with the newest version of Kaspersky although Windows defender works very well and never causes these types of connection problems.

chev65, you are completely wrong! Kaspersky Internet Security is not the cause of this problem. The troublemaker is Asus Network iControl.
I had the same problem and tried to solved it a month and a half. After a bit of investigation I found this post: Not getting my full Internet Speed Notice, he tried Norton Internet Security 2014, Kaspersky Pure 3.0, Windows Defender. He had the same result with different AV products.
After that I've stalkered this thread: Beware: Asus Network iControl can kill upload speeds - Asus - Motherboards After I had turned off this component of ASUS AI Suite II I have Internet connection speed as claimed by my provider.
Yes, if you uninstall KIS you have speed improvement, but is you notice the graph of the speed on speedtest.net is like chain of mountains.
By the way there is a workaround. If you close KIS (tray icon local menu Exit), run another test getting higher speed and run KIS again, you get well enough connection speed.

Your problem chev65 is incomplete investigation and premature conclusions.
