When I installed Win8 on one computer I need a H.P. printer driver. So I went to H.P. support/download did not find the needed driver so I called their Tech. support. A friendly support guy looked at my system and told me my copy of Microsoft Win8 bought at Best Buy was not a legit copy, also my system had been infected and they needed to remove my Win8 clean my system and reinstall Win8. made me a deal of a reduced price of $250US I knew this was not right so I begged them good buy went to Best Buy where I have good friends in the Geek Squad. they got the needed driver and printer works fine.
Today my Netgear routher died, called Netgear to get my lifetime warranty. This also was a support in India guy said it would cost $39US to make sure it was the router I said thanks but no thanks. Took my old Netgear router back to Best Bye where I bought it three years ago and they gave me a new Netgear router. I needed setup help so called Netger as new user also in India guy was friendly looked at my system and helped me get it setup. Then he informed me my computer was under attack and my files were being read he could fix my system and protect my files for the small sum of just $85US. Well I was using a small backup H.P. computer on the Net. hardwired and it was almost never used. So I knew it was a India Tech. support scam again.
I think these guys in India do support for many Mfg.s and software makers, and it's an easy way to gleen a lot of fast cash from people who trust the brand name and don't understand a lot about their computers. I just wonder how many new to computers and older people who know nothing are being ripped off by these East India robbers.

I had the same thing happen when I called the correct support number for HP customer support. I said no thank you and bought a new MacBook Pro, with Applecare, the next day. I don't need support very often, but when I need it I want high-quality legitimate support immediately. I hadn't used my nice HP lappy, on which I had installed Win7 64-bit Ultimate, for about 3 years--until Win8 came out. Now, it's my Win8 test and play machine.

Oh, for the good old days. Many, many years ago, I bought a Gateway 2000 computer and when I called for tech support it was free and the tech was in Kansas City. The great thing about American tech support is that if you've already done some trouble shooting on your own, they can go off-script and jump directly to the problem instead of telling you to do stuff that you just told them that you tried.

My purchase marked my serious back to Mac move. When my Wife's HP desktop died, she opted for an iMac. I added a MacBook Air later. We both have latest iPhones and next to latest iPads. I still really like Win7, but I was fed up with outsourced support that didn't do anything but read scripts or try to cheat you using accents that I typically could not understand. The fraud that I encountered coming out of HP/India was the last straw.

I still really like the Win7 interface--perhaps better that that of Mt. Lion, for example. I don't, with seriousness, use any of the pad/phone-like fluff that Apple has added. But, the good news is that you never have to touch it if you don't want. I have two HP Desktops--see system specs WRT the "mega" one. I built the mega machine for fun and (should) need no support. The other is an older Gateway Desktop--which still is a pretty capable machine. For most of the time I used the Gateway as a primary machine, Gateway support was very good and was in the US. And, I mentioned the HP lappy--where PC support sent me back to Mac for everyday use.

See my comment above about Gateway support.

I also had a Gateway back then and yes support was really great. When I bought my first then state of the art 486 Gateway computer it had the very first Windows O.S.. And Gateway had all new computers run 12 hours before being shipped. They were back then a really quality Mfg. of computer systems. The first Windows O.S. was a real bummer I sure suffered with it, and many people told me you should have ordered it with DOS it works.

I was having problems upgrading to w8 so I called Microsoft and they patched me over to tech gurus and they tried the same scam on me telling me that I had been hacked and only they could fix it. I told them I had a local certified Microsoft tech that would fix it for me and they told me that only they could fix it and it would cost me $199.00 USD. I knew I was not under attack so I told them to go f themselves. I since found the problem myself and there had been no hack. I think Microsoft better look into there techs.

I have received a couple of calls, direct. I mean, not by relay from MS or any other organisation. The first I kept talking for about five minutes, thus making them pay, at least, for an overseas phone call. The second I did the same but then decided, enough is enough. I asked if I could have the callers MS ident, as I was (lied) a Microsoft engineer and might wish to contact them later. The caller rang off. That was some months ago.

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
This IS Netgears support number leading you to these people, they have my former, expired information right in front of them. What they are is a company several companies use. They also pop up when you're trying to find windows help in searches. The whole time, no matter if you're still under support protection current, or not, they will try to sell you a NEW package. They will offer to go inside your computer remotely and fix a problem, and THEN tell you, you need to pay them $200. You don't know not to trust them, Netgears number off your products label sent you to them. Any $40 router company that would try to do this to you is not worth you, paying $10 more for better equipment, and better service...worse i ACTUALLY KNOW PEOPLE WHO DID IT..PAID THEIR RANSOM! That's all your dealing with, a salesman, not a real tech person..once you've paid it's Mai Tai's for the office party...and you still not up and running.

Don't waste your time. International calls are usually free these days. Certainly mine are to most countries I'm likely to call.
