Can't write to NAS

Dear folks,

Just got Win 8 and perhaps it's something with the OS or maybe just my ignorance of the system but I can't write to my NAS (which is running normal Windows shares as well as DNLA), unlike my Win 7 and XP systems also connected to the network (actually, even my Macbook Air has no issues with it).

I can *read* from it just fine, but trying to copy gives me the red "can't" symbol (and Paste isn't available as an option if I copy the file using the shortcut keys). Again, no issues with any other equipment attached.

I haven't done anything with Win 8 in terms of trying to setup the network other than to tell it it's a trusted home network (which it is). And, as I said, I can read from my NAS as well as see all the other machines on the network (haven't tried setting up any shares on those machines just yet, nor have I tried my other two NAS units -- one thing at a time). If there are other settings somewhere I need to change I'd like to know (because there certainly weren't in Win 7, XP or Mac OS X).

Oh, and I'm not running any AV software (not yet -- still trying to set things up here and trying not to complicate matters any).

TIA for any info.

Just tried my other two NAS units and no luck there, either -- I can read them just fine, just can't write.

So it has to be Windows 8 -- what's up with Win 8 and network attached storage?

Well, I solved part of this -- Windows 8 won't allow me to write to any NAS units that show up under "Computer" (but will if I go to "Network") in Explorer. This gets two of my units working, but not the third (which doesn't ever show up in Network).

It's odd that all my other computers and OS see this NAS just fine, just not Win 8. Not a showstopper, but very annoying.

I'm having a very similar issue with Win* and Windows Home Server 2011. I can copy files, read files, etc... but I can't overwrite or delete files. I've checked the folder and file permissions on the server and all appears fine, but it still won't work from my Win8 PC and it worked fine from my PC when I ran Win7. Any ideas?

Oops, I meant "Win8" not "Win*"!

I deleted the user accounts on the Win2011 Server and then recreated them and now Ian connect from the clients and everything works.

Yeah, I was eventually able to get all working by creating a Homegroup (for my Win 7 machine) and then joining it with my Win 8 machine and now all machines (Win 7, Win 8, Macbook Air) are able to see all NAS units (including my brand new one) so all is well.

I did have to reboot the Win 8 machine for this to work (which was not necessary for the Win 7 machine -- that alone kind of threw me off).

Are there NAS drivers built into W8 because I can't see either of my Freecom NAS hard disks & I've searched all over for suitable drivers & haven't found any. I only picked up the W8 laptop yesterday & haven't tried the drivers I used on W7 yet because they were already a bit flakey on that so I've been looking round for some info before taking the plunge.

Hi IanS100 and welcome to Eightforums. I think you will find that the NAS is not being seen by Windows 8 not because of the drivers. If you ping the NAS does it see it? Make sure Firewall is switched off! Reboot W8 and then have a look to see if you can see the NAS.

Ian is right. NAS isn't a device that requires drivers -- what it does is share to the network. How you've actually set up the shares on the NAS itself is the key.

By default most NAS are set for Windows shares (SMB) which usually only require an exposure to the workgroup or homegroup in order to be seen and able to be written to by any Windows boxes. There are other sharing protocols (most notably the linux NFS shares, which have a lot less security but are generally faster and easier to access by almost anything other than Windows) and your NAS can have more than one protocol set at a time.

So at the very least in addition what what Ian suggests make sure your NAS are set for SMB shares, and if there is a place to specify workgroup make sure it matches what you have set up on your Win 8 boxe(s) (or vice versa).

Thanks for the replies, I bit the bullet & installed the NAS Device Manager & hey presto, they appeared. I didn't think I had a snowballs chance of getting it working on W8 but surprise surprise it does, although it's still not the most stable bits of software I've come across

I bet it will work. I had to delete the user accounts on my WHS 2011 server and then recreate them for the Win8 PC to connect properly.
