Security group "Everyone" dropping on PC restart

Hi All,

I've scoured the internet in search for answers but can't find anything! I've got a WDTV Live on my LAN and to be able to access my media on that, I need to make sure my shared folders from my hard drive connected to my PC have the security group "Everyone" added with full control. This all works great, until I turn my PC off and then back on and this group has been dropped from all the shared folders. This didn't happen in Windows 7 so I'm assuming it's a security measure in Windows 8. I'm hoping someone knows a work-around to this?

Your help would be much appreciated.

I have something similar happening on my wife's Win8 laptop.

After laptop restart all 'everyone' shares are no longer available on the network. If I go back to the folders the everyone share is there, I just have to re-enable the share(s)!

This greatly depends on where you are un-sharing Everyone from. If any shares were set further up in the hierarchy then it would override the permissions you set for Everyone unless you put a check mark to inherit all child permissions in the advanced settings.

If you can show me where you were un-sharing Everyone from it might help.

For example 'My Documents' is always unshared after restart.

For example 'My Documents' is always unshared after restart.

You need to set the shares up from the C drive, not network places. When you set up them up at network places it appears to work but then the share disappears, but it is saved at the C drive regardless. So you should set up your shares from the C drive instead and they will stick.

Local disk C>Users>User name>highlight My Documents then right click and choose "Share With" specific people, you can choose Everyone from the drop down list and add read/write permissions as desired then hit the share button. Settings will stick. :dinesh:

You can even add any User on the network as a Local User on your machine so they will show up on the share list, then you can set up permissions that are specific to that User and nobody else.

My Documents are on D Drive, but I have set up all the shares from their own folder on the respective drive.

Thanks for the help Chev65. I can't believe it, the day before posting this thread but all of a sudden today it's working. I've done several restarts and the share is sticking across all 4 folders shared out from my external hard drive. If I find out how I got this working I will post it in here

I have noticed that if the laptop is the already on the network it cannot be accessed, but if it comes onto the network after other machines then it can be accessed!

The reason for this is that, if you set up the shares from "Network" it appears to work but then it doesn't seem to save the settings when you check them again. But if you look in C drive those settings are actually being saved there.
