Poor wifi behaviour and blank chrome tabs

Hi,

Since upgrading to Windows 8 64bit from Windows 7 64bit, I've had the following issues over wifi on my laptop:

Often wifi seems painfully slow. Often images do not download at all, and web pages do not download completely.

Sometimes when I open a new tab in chrome from a link, I just get a blank tab, with no url.

It feels like these 2 issues are related - as if the system intermittantly decides to stop making any effort to get a webpage.

This can happen when the laptop is the only device on the network that is using wifi.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

It sounds like either TCP/IP network stack or winsock is messed up which is a fairly typical problem.

Winsock entries tells Windows 7 how to access your network services. Additionally, your TCP/IP protocol can be corrupted. The TCP/IP protocol is a stack of 4 layers that includes several transport layers, but when this stack is corrupt you will constantly have connectivity issues.

Type or copy each command one at a time into an elevated command prompt then hit "enter" after each one, then reboot your machine.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

If it's something on the wireless side then you should install Xirrus wifi inspector. A screen shot of this will show me the wireless landscape in your area and adjustments can be made from there.

The 2 netsh commands seem to have improved things: the frequency of blank tabs and halted webpages appears to have significantly reduced, but not completely resolved.

Here is a screenshot from Xirrus - it's not obvious, but the graph has a constant history of -18dBm.

For security reasons, I've removed anything from the screenshot with a MAC address.

I'm not sure what is causing the ping loss but have you tried changing your DNS server to something else like maybe go into your routers settings and change the DNS servers to Google's DNS at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

You were trying to hide MAC addresses but you didn't realize that you posted your WAN IP address which is a much greater security risk. Still it's not something I'd worry about.

Do you know what causes winsock and tcpip to get corrupted in the first place?
Is there a more detailed way I can check:
a. what the winsock and tcpip set up is on my system?
b. what they are supposed to be?
i.e. so that I can confirm whether or not they actually are corrupted?

regards,
D

It doesn't work that way, these commands simply fix the problems with winsock or the network stack if there are any, those commands are standard procedure and they can't hurt anything.

As it is, I'm not seeing any problems at all with your wireless or ipconfig info.

Those commands have already fixed more machines than you can imagine and they are perfectly safe to run. :)

I've changed my DNS to google
I'm still getting blank chrome tabs, and web videos hanging - over wifi on my laptop.
I don't get these issues on my PC, plugged directly into the router. I didn't get the issues on the laptop before I upgraded to Win 8 64bit (i.e. when I was on Win 7 64bit).

Not scientific I know, but when I typed in
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ip reset reset.log hit
things temporarily seemed to improve.

...I'm prepared to install win 8 from scratch

...looks like the problem may be chrome-specific - at least with videos hanging.
Running the sames videos on Firefox I don't get that problem.

Uninstalling and reinstalling chrome hasn't fixed the problem. I've disabled add-ins. I've cleared the cache and all browsing history.

I hope you typed those commands in one at a time hitting enter after each one then rebooted the machine.

Yes my goal was to fix the problem with the wireless connection. Chrome and it's particular problem is another subject altogether, you might want to try the Chrome forum for that problem.

From what I can see you aren't dropping packets any longer and the problem with the wireless connection appears to be fixed although there are other adjustments that can be made to your router if you want faster wireless connection speeds.

Changing to 802.11n Only mode will just about double your connection speed, using channel bonding is another way to increase bandwidth, that would be the 20-40Mhz setting, 20Mhz is single channel mode.
