    Problems with internet

    Hi,
since I upgraded to Win 8 from win7 x64 ultimate I am having continual problems with my internet connection.
I am running Win 8 on an ASUS P8Z77V-Deluxe, Intel 3770K, Belkin Router.

The internet is connecting via the Intel Gigabit LAN (Realtek and WLAN are disabled).

The problem is a little bit strange and has only shown up after installing Win 8.

I can connect to the internet and load up my home page - Google usually, I can do this regardless with any browser I have, Firefox, IE. and Safari, the home page loads.

I can browse without problems for various periods of time and then, out of the blue I cannot access any pages other than the top level of say Google - if I click on a link all I get is "waiting for google" nothing loads. I get no timeouts, nothing just a continuous "waiting"

If I try to open my router home page / setup using my 192.168.2.1 it just sits there, doesn't open doesn't hang, just sits there the same - waiting!

I go to adapter settings and network troubleshooting and Win 8 detects nothing to be a problem.

The only way I can get things to work again is to shutdown and restart, then everything is fine for what could be 30 minutes or 2 days, it is totally random.

The strange thing is that google works, I can type in a search and it will load up the search results but I cannot get any of the links to load, nor address the router page. Do you think this is a router issue or a Win 8 problem?

    Thanks!

Looks like you are using a Belkin router with that default gateway 192.168.2.1, you might want to see if there is a firmware update for it.

I've been seeing this issue quite a bit lately on Windows 7 machines also. Same symptoms, but some people can never get to anything but Google sites and can't get anywhere else. It doesn't seem to fluctuate from bad to good for most of them.

I would try moving my DNS settings either to the router by typing the DNS servers into the routers settings for DNS or try static DNS by typing the DNS server address into the IPv4 properties. I assume you are using Google's DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Thanks, I will give that a try. Currently using IP assigned address, and that is automatic so I'll give the Google DNS a try and see how it goes.

A question or two for you if you can help? Should I enter the 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 into the DNS settings on the router or should I leave that as "÷btain Automatically" and just put the DNS settings into the IPV4 settings on my network card? (Then again - should I do both?)

I tried setting the DNS in the IPV4 page and I can connect, I tried entering both into the router and the IPV4 page and can still connect, I also tried the google settings in the IPV4 and entered AT&T / 3BB DNS into the router (110.164.252.222 /110.164.252.223) and it STILL connects!

I am having the same exact problem now with 2 of the 4 computers in my household. Those are both running Windows 8, the other 2 that seem to work fine, are running Windows 7. I also have 2 voip phones, which are not having any issues. Any ideas? I am going to upgrade the firmware on my D Link Router now. Will let you know if that resolves it.

After following Chev65's advice, I have set my router (there are no more firmware upgrades available for mine) to obtain DNS automatically, and set up the IPV4 as Chev65 suggested with the Google DNS of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and my machine has run for about 15 hours without any problem - I don't know it is Placaebo Effect, but I will swear that my torrents and my YouTube videos are both running faster.

The clincher for me is that if I just happened to go into the network and sharing page in Win 8 and even access the LAN properties without changing anything, when I exited, I started getting problems with connections and had to reboot - This has stopped since making the recommended changes.

I do find that browsing is a little slower (I am accessing the Google server via Thaialand so that might be something to do with it) but I have had none of the problems I had before where I couldn't access deeper levels from the Google page.

I have tried it on Safari, IE10 and Firefox and it is running pretty much at an acceptable level, I have even dared to turn on that software from ASUS that caused me problems before "NetworkIcontrol".

If this runs tonight I intend to try and enable my WiFi and test again, then enable the Realtek LAN and see what happens - if it keeps up like this then it is going to get marked as solved and a big thank you to Chev65!

    Hi,
I am having problems with my internet connection too, after installing windows 8. The wireless connection icon shows that everything is fine-but when i attempt opening any of the browsers-explorer, chrome, or firefox, the web pages refuse to open-but windows live messenger works perfectly.
So I am baffled with the whole thing. Any solutions out there, please?
    Thanks

Out of curiosity, what motherboards are you guys using? I wondered if it was something to do with ASUS (I am on an ASUS P8Z77V-Deluxe - i73770k Processor) I have a few issues in the past with ASUS Suite and some of their bundled Bloatware.

I discarded their Intel LAN driver and downloaded the Intel version from the Intel site but still had the same trouble, however, there are a number of ASUS background processes that remain operating even if you install their software....just a thought.

The weird thing though that springs to mind as the common denominator is Win 8! I used this exact same setup with Win 7 x64 Ultimate and never had the same problems - usually similar hangs were caused by an overloaded router, but I was always able to access the router set up and restart. The problems here prevent you from getting into the router. Even if I switch off the router and let it reboot, I still cannot access the setup page, the only thing that sorts it out is a reboot of the OS.

I'm not sure why you can't access the router's set up page but you definitely should be able to if you type the correct default gateway into the URL of your browser.

As you can see you aren't alone with this problem but I'm still not sure about what the exact cause is other than it has something to do with DNS. Give it some time to make sure the changes work then report back in if you can.

If you want to find a faster DNS server in your area you can try using Google's name bench which will find the fastest DNS server in your area.

namebench - Open-source DNS Benchmark Utility - Google Project Hosting

In general I like to set up my DNS access through my router so all machines use the same DNS server, rather than having to type the DNS into my IPv4 properties but which ever way works best for you is what you should be using.

Yes for this particular problem it usually works to reset the TCP/IP stack and reset Winsock.

Winsock entries tells Windows 7 how to access your network services. Additionally, your TCP/IP protocol can be corrupted. The TCP/IP protocol is a stack of 4 layers that includes several transport layers, but when this stack is corrupt you will constantly have connectivity issues.

You will want to type or copy the commands below into an elevated command prompt one at a time, hit enter after each one then reboot your machine and see if your connection is any better.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

After updating my router, the problem seems to have gone away.. Maybe too soon to tell, but have not noticed it since the update. It was very prevalent before..
