I read that firmware updates or changing the modem to something newer has resolved the problem for some people.

After following Chev65's advice, I have set my router (there are no more firmware upgrades available for mine) to obtain DNS automatically, and set up the IPV4 as Chev65 suggested with the Google DNS of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and my machine has run for about 15 hours without any problem - I don't know it is Placaebo Effect, but I will swear that my torrents and my YouTube videos are both running faster.

The clincher for me is that if I just happened to go into the network and sharing page in Win 8 and even access the LAN properties without changing anything, when I exited, I started getting problems with connections and had to reboot - This has stopped since making the recommended changes.

I do find that browsing is a little slower (I am accessing the Google server via Thaialand so that might be something to do with it) but I have had none of the problems I had before where I couldn't access deeper levels from the Google page.

I have tried it on Safari, IE10 and Firefox and it is running pretty much at an acceptable level, I have even dared to turn on that software from ASUS that caused me problems before "NetworkIcontrol".

If this runs tonight I intend to try and enable my WiFi and test again, then enable the Realtek LAN and see what happens - if it keeps up like this then it is going to get marked as solved and a big thank you to Chev65!
I'm not sure why you can't access the router's set up page but you definitely should be able to if you type the correct default gateway into the URL of your browser.

As you can see you aren't alone with this problem but I'm still not sure about what the exact cause is other than it has something to do with DNS. Give it some time to make sure the changes work then report back in if you can.

If you want to find a faster DNS server in your area you can try using Google's name bench which will find the fastest DNS server in your area.

namebench - Open-source DNS Benchmark Utility - Google Project Hosting

In general I like to set up my DNS access through my router so all machines use the same DNS server, rather than having to type the DNS into my IPv4 properties but which ever way works best for you is what you should be using.
Thanks again, I am currently testing out the link to the Google name server.
What would you suggest I should do with my IPV4 settings on my LAN setup? I am going to give your suggestion a try today by putting in the fastest DNS directly into the router - should I put the same address into the IPV4 page or set it to obtain DNS automatically, or does it not matter?

Thanks again - day 2 and no problems yet - fingers crossed!

UPDATE- I set my DNS on the router to the two fastest suggested by name bench - the first was still 8.8.8.8 from Google , I then entered the same addresses into my LAN IPV4 and saved.

As soon as I clicked on Safari to start browsing I got BSOD - Driver error not less than or equal and the machine restarted. Co-incidence or not? But it is browsing again OK after restart.

Just the router is where you type in the DNS server addresses.

You can leave the IPv4 settings at default, don't enter anything there, just leave it at DHCP enabled. Best to let the router handle everything for now.

So, even though the firmware upgrade on my router does seem to have resolved my internet issues (2 days now, no issues), I am noticing that sharing between my computers is still pretty dang challenged. One minute it works, the next minute it doesn't. I am the owner of all of the directories that I am sharing, and I have set it so that user everyone has full control over the network resources, but it is still intermittently not working. When I try to diagnose the problem, windows troubleshooter finds no issues, but it still is unable to access the folders. Very strange. Anyone else having this problem?

I'm glad the firmware update helped, seems that was a universal fix around here.

You didn't mention the type of network you have, Workgroup mixed Op system or Homegroup which would be only Windows 7 or 8 machines.

You might try adding "Everyone" both to the Security tab advanced settings and the Sharing Permissions settings which should give everyone in the network access to the files and folders on that machine.

Be sure that the time/date settings are all the same on your networked machines.

The sharing issue is between 2 Windows 8 machines. Right at the moment, I am unable to browse any files on one machine from the other. Computers are in the same Homegroup. I had both machines leave the group and re-join, but it is still not working. They are also apart of the same workgroup.

Well, it has worked for a while and I thought it was finally solved, but it has gone to the dogs again today, hanging every 30 minutes or so, cannot access the router, uTorrent dead as a doornail.

Then I discovered a message from Microsoft saying that my antivirus had quit working twice and was a security threat - AVAST - I disabled it and Windows automatically revived Defender - the internet is flying again....touch wood ... still using the 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. DNS addresses as suggested, so again, if it all works out I will report back - Googling this problem, there really seems to be quite a few people getting the same problems - maybe MS will come up with a fix! (I had the same problem today where I could not access the router log on page - I had to switch it off and reboot the router and Win 8)

Just a quick update - I noticed that yesterday afternoon after having to reboot yet again my machine began automatically installing a number of updates from Microsoft -
KB2770917, KB2756872, KB2538243, KB2777294 and KB2764462. The updates don't really say much as to what they are for but since I installed them, my Youtube and video online are working much much faster, I haven't had a single disconnection problem like before and have been able to access my router without any problem! I also managed to test a video upload to Skydrive and had my son watch it in HD full screen on his computer - it ran for 30 minutes without a glitch - maybe just maybe, something has been fixed.
