    Weird Weird Problem!

I have the strangest problem with my internet since updating to W8. My internet works absolutely fine all day, up until later in the day (not sure what time exactly this happens) but it stops working! It says it is connected but it simple can't find a network.

I am connected via LAN to an apartments in house internet setup.

I honestly have no idea what the problem could be! When I was in W7 it was fine. The ethernet cable is always plugged in properly.

I have talked to the internet "pro's" who operate the LAN in the building but they are confused by this too.

    Help would be great thanks.

Are others in the building also losing their internet access at a similar time? Upgrading to Windows 8 could be co-incidental. There are some really bizarre things that can upset an ADSL signal if that's how the building gets its access.

As far as I know I am the only one. I have spoken to a couple of others and theirs is fine, but considering there are hundreds in this building it is by know means a comprehensive answer.

What I'd be inclined to do is, when the PC loses internet, reboot it and run ipconfig /all in a Command Prompt window to see if it still gets its IP address.

To do this, press Windows key+X and, from the menu that opens, select Command Prompt. At the prompt, type ipconfig /all and press Enter. This will show details of all network adapters in the PC, including the IP address of the one you're connecting to the internet with. If you are unsure what the address details mean, post back with the actual addresses:
    • IP address
    • Subnet Mask address
    • Default Gateway address
    • DNS Server addresses (probably two)

Cheers for the help mgmcc. Results are:

IPv4 Address: 10.0.5.115 Then has in brackets "preferred" if that means anything important?
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
    Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0
    DNS Server: 10.0.0.1
    60.234.1.1

I suspect the loss of the Default Gateway address is the problem; this should be the router's IP address. Try allocating fixed addresses.

Press the Windows Key+R to open the Run box. Type in ncpa.cpl and press Enter to open the Network Connections folder. Right click the Local Area Connection and select "Properties", then highlight the entry for Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click the Properties button. In the Properties sheet that opens, enter these settings and see if that gets you going:

Note: To revert to automatic addressing, set both the IP and DNS sections back to obtaining their addresses automatically.

Hmm, that didn't fix the problem. When I opened the network connections folder I have 3 options. "Cyber" (which is the company who runs the network in this building (full name Cybercom Global). "Local Area connection" and "Wireless". I did what you said under "Local Area Connection", but I assume that isn't the one I need to be working with and I need to fix the "Cyber" connection. I went into the properties of the IPv4 of the Cyber connection but there is no option for "gateway".

I then ran ipconfig again to check if I gave you the wrong details. What I gave you was headed "PPP adapter Cyber". Further down there is "Ethernet adapter local area connection". For this the details are:

    IPv4 Address: 10.0.5.115
    Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0
    Default Gateway: 10.0.0.1
    (no DNS Server).

    Does this help? WebRep

OK, set the Local Area Connection back to getting its addresses automatically as it appears not to be the adapter that is used to connect.

At some time, additional software must have been installed to create the "Cyber" network adapter which is used with the service and I think you are going to need help from the Cybercom support people to sort out the problem.

I know this is hackneyed but... Have you tried breaking the connection, waiting a while, then plugging back in? It sounds as though you are leaving the connection up all day, and in the not so distant past that was discouraged by (relatively) large network administrators. I imagine this was among the first things you tried, but just in case...

    Yep I have tried that

So would this be a problem with the upgrade to windows 8 or more likely something else? It just seems like such an odd problem how it cuts in and out!
