2 network adapters showing up in Windows 8, causing problems

    Hi,

I'm running Windows 8 Pro 64 bit on a machine I built myself. The machine contains an Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z/Gen3 MOBO with built-in gigabit ethernet. This machine was previously running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with no issues.

Here's the issue I'm having in Windows 8 - I renamed my connection from "Ethernet" to "Virgin Media" and gave my PC a static IP address. Everything was working just fine. I rebooted my PC and I noticed that my connection had reverted to being called "Ethernet" and no static IP was set up. When I tried to rename the connection and set up the static IP again, it told me that it couldn't because another connection existed that had this name.

When I looked in Device Manager, I noticed that my network adapter had changed from an Intel 82579V to an Intel 82579LM. When I viewed hidden devices, I noticed that both were listed there. The 82579V connection is still called "Virgin Media" and still has the static IP set up, but Windows 8 had automatically switched to the other connection for some reason. In Windows 7, it only listed one network adapter and it was listed as an Intel 82579V, so I'm not sure why it also lists an Intel 82579LM.

Every time I reboot my PC it seems to pick one of these network adapters at random. If I uninstall one, it just comes back. If I disable one, sometimes my PC will boot up and have no access to the Internet because it's selected the disabled connection instead of the enabled one.

Why are there 2 network adapters listed in Windows 8? How can I get rid of one of them permanently, or set Windows 8 to always use the same one?

    Many thanks.

download the drivers from the asus website, try the old V16.5.0.0 ( in Windows 7 section ) it's a bug in Windows 7 and 8 it confuse your 82579v for a 82579LM ....you may also try the beta one in the windows 8 drivers section ( I have not try it yet)

    Thanks!

I just ran the Intel Driver Update Utility on Intel's site and installed the latest drivers for the 82579V (12.2.45.0, dated 10/08/2012) and the 82579VLM entry has disappeared from Device Manager. It looks like the problem is solved.

go set your update to " check for update but let me chose what to install " ( something like that) , because Windows update is capable to bring back this mess.
