Internet connection problems

Hello,

Firstly I'm no computer expert atall so I might be showing my ignorance here.

I've just got a Sony Vaio with windows 8 which initially worked ok, but now won't connect to the internet atall, either with the ethernet cable or on wi-fi. Windows diagnosis does nothing.

It was working fine until I installed Bullguard anti-virus, which I tried uninstalling but the internet still wouldn't work thereafter. The cable connection DID work whilst the wireless didn't, but no both don't - so I'm kinda stuck. I don't know it the Bullguard thing's coincidence or not? I've checked the firewall isn't blocking anything it shouldn't. I haven't had the opportunity to test on another network.

I'm writing this on my windows 7 Vaio, which still works ok. However, periodically throughout the day a small yellow exclamation mark appears over the signal bars on the bottom right of the screen and the internet is lost for a few moments. (The connection problem persisted on an old modem with a different ISP - but as I write, the old machine works, the windows 8 one doesn't).

Any help would be great, as I'm stumped and have a new computer I can't use :(

Cheers all,

Harry

Ah I just uninstalled (including a check box which I didn't notice to remove ALL settings) and it seems to be working?! I though I was doing the right thing with getting anti-virus!

Is the windows defender system perfectly sufficient then? should i get any more protection?

Many thanks,

With Defender and good habit you are more than OK, just stay away from downloading free stuff from Internet. They are exception of course, what's good with Metro Apps, it's only distributed at Microsoft Store, so I guess it give more security compare to free stuff from C-Net and others

Ahh now it won't connect again (despite saying it has internet access and having a full 5 bar signal) - despite all the antivirus being removed - anything I can do / check?

I'm about ready to throw the thing out the window.

I can't say what problems the A/V might have created but running the two commands in bold will sort out any problems related to the network stack or winsock.

To reset them both type the following two commands into an elevated command prompt one at a time hitting enter after each one then reboot the system.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)
