Windows apps won't connect to the internet although the desktop will

I've spent ages scouring Google and trying different things but with no joy and so would appreciate any help!

I upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 8 and none of the apps work and they all show offline. When I open the desktop I can use the internet with no problem. In the network and sharing options it says that I am not connected to a network when clearly I am so I'm guessing it is possibly a network/IPv6 issue?

Any ideas?

Hi. I have a problem that is more or less like yours. Yesterday i installed my McAfee paid account here in my win 8 laptop and the installation gone wrong. Then the apps on start menu never open again. They start and stay in loading menu and never stop. I think that it have something to deal with the firewall or something because i tried to change my account to a Microsoft user account and it says that i have some troubles with the internet saying that it can't connect to microsoft services right now.

Any ideas?! Help please! =)

Lots of people with the same problems - anyone got the answer?!

I tried uninstalling antivirus, firewall etc to see if that was blocking it and have gone through most of the help options I have found but with no joy.

I'm guessing it has to be linked to the fact that it won't connect to a network and wondering if IPv6 is somehow involved?!?!

Hi everyone. I solved my problem using a tool from w8. In changing definitions of laptop, in general, i click on update pc without changing the files. Then i lost all my programs (the files like music, photos and so on get intact). That was a "price" i had to pay to get my problem solved!

Hope it help!

I used the PC refresh. It got rid of all the programs I have been happily using and still didn't fix my problem!

So, having spent the morning getting my laptop back to how I want it, can anyone help me with my issue? All help appreciated!

I have the same issue.

1. Fresh load on WIN 8 Pro, Metro/Modern apps like News, Mail, Financial, Photos, etc worked for about a day or so, then they won't open. Checked screen resolutoin, UAC, and I am not using any AV outside of Win Defender and Win Firewall.

2.Reloaded, complete reinstall of Win 8 Pro, same results, apps worked about a day or so then the regular Metro/Modern apps won't open.

3. Called MS Support and they suggested a WIN 8 Refresh. Did that (it took quite a while) and no change, same apps won't open.

MS has a problem that seems to be affecting a lot of folks, just not everyone is seems. They make us start with the Metro start page, you would think they would have gotten at least that right for everyone. Anyway, I supposedly will get a call from a level 2 support person tonight, but I am more apt I think to get the solution in Eight Forums someday.

Mine is now working.

I had a new router at work that we were going to install anyway. I did it all through my laptop and the tiles worked straight away. At home they don't work and it says that it is not connected to a network although the desktop is still happily connected to the internet.

It's annoying.

You guys should try turning on the metered connection option, if you don't it will limit what your connection does in order to save bandwidth.

If you installed anything resembling McAfee then you should plan on having things not work right unless you go to their forum so you can figure out how to set it up correctly. Uninstalling using their special uninstall tool would be my first choice.
