Solved losing shared folders upon restart

I have a desktop PC a HTPC (both Win 8 64 bit) and a laptop running Win 7 all on a home network. I have shared the folders on the HTPC numerous times, both to everyone and to the user on the desktop. Every time after I restart I lose the sharing privileges between the desktop and the HTPC. Is there something I am missing? I never had this problem with Win 7. Please advise.

I have a similar problem with the network printer which is on a PC with Windows 7 Pro. I downloaded installed Windows 8 on a PC. I added the 2 printers connected to the Win7 PC. Installed fine and printed test pages from both printers. 1 printer is an HP and the other is an Epson. After restart of Win8 PC cannot access printers. If I uninstalled the printers and reinstall them, they work. I can ping the PC with the printers. If I try net view I get a "system 5 error has occurred." No problem with the PC's running win7. Any suggestions?

My Desktop PC has 5 HDDs, the shared HDD is on D drive. The HTPC has 3 HDDs and the shared folders are on D and E. The funny thing is that I can always see the shared folders if I view them from the HTPC, but trying to access the HTPC from the desktop I cannot see them and have to reshare them every time.

In the past a System Error 5 error simply meant 'Acces denied'
No clue how to fix it right now though. I might get back on this later.

Wait wait.. you can see them but then you can't when you're trying to acces them from your desktop? Is that what you're saying?

If I try to access a shared file on my desktop (D drive) I can always access it from my HTPC. However, as I usually do it the other way around, I cannot access my shared files on the HTPC (D and E) drives from my desktop PC. Ic can still see all of the shared folders when I open my network folder, but when I transfer a file it says I don't have the privileges to do it. ideas? thought??

Yup, rights.

Navigate to the network and sharing center on the pc with the shares,
Click on 'Change advanced sharing settings'

Go to the profile that says it's your current one.

File and printer sharing should be turned on (since you can see the folders and items in it)
HomeGroup Connections, if you configured a home group, leave this on 'Allow windows to manage.. blahblah'
If you don't want your homegroup to manage it like me, put it on 'Use user accounts.. blahblah'

Now open up 'All networks'

Public Folder sharing
'Turn on sharing..'

File Sharing Connections
'Enable file sharing for..'

Password Protected Sharing
For test purposes, you can set this to 'Turn off password protected sharing' If this works, try setting this back.

Alright, now head to the folder that you are trying to acces
Right click it>Properties
Open up the tab security and click on edit

Press 'Add...'
In the box that appears, type 'Everyone' (or everyone in the installed language) en press enter

Now click on 'Everyone' (which should be added to the list right now)
For testing purposes you can give them 'full control' though you might wanna fine tune that later on.
Now click on 'Apply'

Go ahead and click on the tab 'sharing'
Click on 'Advanced sharing'
the box with 'share this folder' should already be enabled.

Click on 'permissions'
Make sure 'Everyone' is added with the corresponding rights, if not, add it here too.

Just to be sure, go back to the tab 'sharing'
Click on the button that says 'Share'
and make sure the user 'everyone' is added to the list. It should be in the drop-down, if not, add it manually.

Does it work for you now?

Can you run through these settings please?

Thank you. I have restarted both PCs and the sharing continues. I had tried adding everyone by right clicking the folder and choosing "share with" then adding everyone. That method only seemed to last until the machine restarted and then was lost. Thank you so much for your help!

I finally got network printers to work. I reinstalled Windows 8 and the network printers are now working as they should, after a restart. Not sure what the problem was. I did a clean install both times. Will play with Windows 8 for a while since it is on a spare PC, but won't upgrade other PC's from Windows 7 until I have to. Never had so many BSOD.
