Not able to play DVD over network

My new Windows 8 machine does not have a DVD drive.

I was hoping to play movies over the network.

I "shared" the DVD drive which is installed in my Windows 7 machine.

I mapped the drive to Y: on the Win8 machine. I can see it, it has two subfolders AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS but I cannot find a way to play the movie.

Any ideas?

chev65, I downloaded Windows Media Center. I can play DVD that are connected directly to the machine, I am having trouble with DVDs that are on another networked computer.

You need to add the Movie files from the other machines Movie Library to WMC through it's interface.

They're not movie files; it's a DVD. I can't figure out how to make WMC see the other DVD as a drive.

You just need to right click that drive with the DVD, chose properties and put a check mark to share and hit apply then go to the advanced sharing part and put check marks to give other users "Everyone" full control then hit apply ok etc.

You should be able to access that drive from Windows Explorer and control it from the other machine after that.

That should give you access to the drive and play the DVD BUT you may need to make more adjustments with security tab or permissions tab on the C drive of the machine with the DVD player. :)

This should be working for you Cly, report back here if possible. :)

I have access to the DVD drive but it does not look like a DVD. It's just a folder with two subfolders called AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS, that have movie files inside them.

Media Center says it does not see a DVD.

Yes this is what you get when you open a DVD file. This is why it's much easier to stream DVD's from a file located in the Video file location through WMC.

You will need to click on one of those files in VideoTS to start the movie, VLC player should be able to pick it up and play it after you click on the right file, you will need to choose "more options" then choose VLC player, "not sure which one file to pick but one of them will work" . :)
