Many thanks Maxeyas. I will follow your tips and hope these will help overcome my problem. I have recently installed a Win 8 compatible version of AVAST Free and wonder whether this might have something to do with the app errors. I will keep you posted.

Why do the apps on my desktop end up with an X (unusable) on most of them which requires me to go to the store and repair each faulty app individually. Once repaired, the system works like a charm until the next reboot when I have to repeat this process. Has anyone encountered this problem, and...
