Yes Keith, that is the driver file I linked in my first post. Runnig that file created a folder with .ppd files, an .ini file and no .exe files. But what I did not do was run that downloaded .exe file in compatibility mode. So I have one more thing to try.

At the choose your printers window click windows update to get the entire list of printers with Windows 8 support.

That is what you mean, right? You are expecting an install.exe file amoung the downloded driver files. There isn't one.

I tried disconnecting the network cable, connecting the printer with a USB cable, and repeating the install again. In this case windows installed the printer with a generic USB print driver even though I told it to use the downloaded driver. Of course that's the wrong driver and the printer...
