My windows 8 pro, now 8.1 pro were all updates from XP, two of which were bought directly from Microsoft directly when they were cheap and the other was the 2 dvd retail upgrade. My question is, do I keep or bin the XP discs and COA's?

I have no trouble with 8.1 although I also use 7 and XP but he is in his 70's and is not very good with pc's. His wife has 7 on her laptop and he can manage that after using XP for years. I'm sure he could manage 8.1 if he had to.

Is there such a thing as running a fresh installation of 8.1 without having the COA or product at the time of setting up on a pc? I'm asking this because someone I know was given a laptop by his son which had Ubuntu and because Linux frightened the life out of him his son put W8.1 on it...

Are you talking about RS232? If so there are lots of cheap usb to 9 pin adapters on fleabay which might work with a modern laptop.

You might try deleting the driver in device manager and then restarting the pc, hopefully Windows will find drivers automatically.

I recently bought one of those pci express cards with two external ports and a twenty pin internal connector and Win 8.1 pro 64 had installed the correct drivers before I had time to put the mini cd into the drive.

Don't give up, I have updated three pc's from 8 to 8.1 and each time I had difficulty finding the site which had the actual download.
