Windows8 has nothing to do with how you save a file. Your word processor (MS Office ?) is saving those documents as .docx by default. Change the default to .doc if you prefer that extension
You say the problem does not exist when connecting monitor to the integrated/onboard port. Maybe the wake-up signal is only going to that port . Is it recommended or possible to disable the integrated adapter in bios so you will only see/use the addon adapter?? Just a thought..
Hi Lisa.me again. I realized after my post a few days ago that I had failed to read closely your original post on this subject.I like a few others did not realize the volume license versions did not allow update/upgrade without an account to accomplish the update. Only a suggestion..do a...

Miles..I have Win7 pro 32bit in a vm on Win8 pro 64bit. Using Vm player which is free and extremely easy to install/configure and use. Simply allocate a few gigs disc space, couple gigs memory and you got a perfectly working Win7 !!
The problem you are seeing could be caused by the Win8 "fastboot" feature. Disable fastboot and see if that fixes the problem. It can occur on dual boot and other multi partition configurations.
I have same issue with Metro Store using my account(administrator). Store tries to open but disappears. All other live tiles & apps work fine. However I can create new account and have no trouble w/ store. I also cannot download the store app diag file.
