It is not hardware related issue, windows reinstall helped. most probably it was caused by one of the windows updates.

I have the same issue right now. I think some of my old images work as expected, the new ones, downloaded AFTER I did complete win 8.1 reinstall ( a few days ago). Moving them to external hard drive is a king of semi-solution, because then they do work. I0mars01 - did you solve that issue...

i see no process I can kill, if that is what you mean I did not find any rootkit, any virus ( AVG and avast scan), no Crypto Locker files present... can it be CPU throttling?

sad but that fast initial euforia was a placebo effect - actually freeing up C: partition helped just a little. system is slow as hell

I have read somewhere, that setting fixed pagefile size causes the drive to write in the same place all the time and increases wearoff of those particular SSD cells I have the same problem as author, started a new thread, currently freeing up some space at C: partition improved my performance...

Thank you for your reply. I just have deleted 20gb of data ( had only 5GB free on C: partition) and it seems to improved the situation. I will update here how it works for a long run. Hope it will help others.
