Have never gotten the new hardware found mesg no matter what with this printer

Have tried all combinations of connecting, turning on and off etc with no joy. The ends of the usb cable must in some cases be a real issue because the printer has a type B connector and the computer has type A so that is idiot proof. Any ideas about why nothing resembling a usb port shows up...
